Alear was one of the many children of the Fell Dragon Sombron. Due to Sombron's disregard for his children, most of Alear's siblings died. Their sister Veyle survived, as she was too young to partake in combat. While in Gradlon, Alear encountered a person who looked strikingly similar to them, who unbeknownst to Alear was a version of them from the future. They fought, and past Alear lost. Some time after Alear encountered Lumera, the ruler of the Divine Dragons, and despite some initial hostility they connected over feelings of loneliness, with Alear agreeing to meet her again. At an unknown time, Alear betrayed their father and defeated him, but Sombron used the last of his energy to kill Alear. Lumera infused Alear with her essence so they could be revived and live as part Divine Dragon, which also caused have of Alear's naturally red hair to turn blue. Lumera left them in a bed chamber in the Somniel and gave them the Ring of the Hero King while waiting for the day they woke up.
A thousand years later, Alear wakes up from their slumber but without their memories. The current Steward of the Dragon Vander and his two students Clanne and Framme lead Alear to Lythos Castle, though they are attacked by Corrupted along the way. Lumera tells Alear about the rings, half of which are with other kingdoms. However, the castle comes under attack by Elusian forces, and Lumera is killed by a hooded figure.
Alear sets off with Alfred, who had arrived at the castle just as the attack broke out. They meet Alfred's sister Céline and her retainers in Firene. They also meet Veyle, who tells them she's looking for her missing sibling. They later meet Prince Alcryst and his retainers at the border of Firene and Brodia. He takes them to Brodia Castle, where they fend off an Elusian attack and meet King Morion and Prince Diamant. During another battle at the border with Elusia, Morion is taken by Elusian King Hyacinth.
Alear and their army defeat Elusian Princess Ivy and proceed to the Elusian castle, where they learn Hyacinth has killed Morion and turned him into a Corrupted in a bid to revive Sombron. He does so, but Sombron quickly turns on Hyacinth and devours him. Alear also learns that the hooded figure who killed Lumera was Veyle. They lose the six Emblem Rings they have acquired and flee south to Solm, with Ivy reappearing and granting Alear two of the Rings.
The army meets Prince Fogado of Solm and soon after his older sister Timerra. They head to Solm's castle where they encounter Ivy's sister Hortensia, who has been brainwashed by the Four Hounds. They break her brainwashing and defend the castle. Now joined with the heirs to all four kingdoms, the army proceeds to Florra Port only to learn it has been razed by the Four Hounds and Veyle. After a battle, Veyle manages to wrest control from her evil side to trick the Four Hounds' Zephia into giving her two of the Rings, allowing her to toss them to Alear as the forces depart. As a result of this, Zephia forces a helmet upon Veyle that forces her evil half to be shown.
Alear remporarily allies with the Four Hounds' Mauvier and Marni until they reunite with the Hounds. Marni, disgusted by the helmet Zephia forced on Veyle, attempts to break it with her axe, but is only able to crack it before Zephia kills her for her betrayal. However, this crack is enough for Alear to fully destroy the helmet, restoring Veyle's good personality. Sombron attempts to kill her for this, but Alear blocks the attack and is killed. Using her Fell Dragon powers, Veyle is able to temporarily revive Alear as a Corrupted, allowing them to recover all the Rings, but when her power begins to falter Alear begins to fade. The Emblem Rings then conduct a one-time ritual that revives Alear as another Emblem, making them the Fire Emblem.
Sombron raises the continent of Gradlon, powered by a series of crystals. After facing and defeating Griss and Zephia in battle, destroying the first crystal, the latter gives Alear a Draconic Crystal. Using it, Alear and their army are temporarily transported into the past, where they battle and defeat a past version of Alear, destroying the second crystal. Lastly, they proceed to battle a Corrupted Lumera. They defeat Lumera, who tells Alear she's proud of their gift before she dies.
Alear and their army raise the Somniel into the portal, where they confront Sombron. Although the Emblems' power is weakened, Alear is able to defeat their father. Their forces return to Earth, and as Marth had previously informed Alear, the Emblems fade away, though they each give Alear a message before they depart. Some time later, Alear prepares to be ordained the new Divine Dragon monarch. Standing in the Ring Chamber, they attempt to summon Marth once more but nothing happens. As they leave, the Rings make a promise to each other that they will Engage with Alear once more should their power be needed.
