Picture Segment Description

SCENE 1 Telly welcomes the viewer and announces he and Baby Bear will be playing today. Baby Bear explains that he can't do so, but has exciting news: his baby cousin Oliver is coming to visit. He goes on to say that Oliver is his first-cousin and his first first-cousin (since he's never had a first-cousin before). He shows Telly a photograph of Oliver and adds another first into the mix: this is his first time meeting his new cousin. "You only meet your first first-cousin for the first time once," Telly says. After the two try to decipher what Telly just said, Baby Bear rushes home to meet him.
Animation Kids talk about families, often mentioning having rhinoceroces as pets.

SCENE 2 Baby Bear arrives home and comes face-to-face with Oliver. He goes to the shelf to show him his special porridge bowl, but finds he can't reach it. He begins calling Mama Bear for help but she's too busy with Oliver to notice. Instead, Baby Bear tries showing Oliver a drawing he made of his porridge bowl, but Mama Bear still doesn't notice. Papa Bear arrives home for his lunch break and is instantly drawn to Oliver. He then remarks to Baby Bear that he's no longer the baby in the family. Baby Bear then realizes Oliver is getting all the attention since he's the baby now, and runs out of the cottage in a fit.
Film A boy anticipates the arrival of his new baby sibling. He listens to the heartbeat of both his mom and the baby, then sounds them out with pots, colanders and a grater.

He explains his situation to Telly, who lends him his triangle pillow to let his frustration out on. Afterward, Baby Bear feels a little relieved, so long as he stays away from Oliver.
SCENE 3 cont'd He then hears Mama Bear calling him. He looks down the street and sees her with Oliver in a carriage. He runs off, with Telly bringing the pillow for good measure.

SCENE 4 Around the corner, Baby Bear thinks he's safe from Mama Bear and the "attention-stealer" until Mama Bear wheels him to her son. She says she has grocery shopping to do and leaves Oliver with him. Baby Bear thinks that now there'll be no more "baby talk" since his Mama is gone, but Ruthie, Big Bird, and two kids spot the baby and begin babbling with him. He gets even more upset when Telly falls prey to Oliver's cuteness. While Telly "coochie-coos" with the baby some more, Baby Bear tries not losing his cool.

SCENE 5 Baby Bear wonders how his day could possibly get any worse; right on cue, Goldilocks shows up and plays with the baby. Baby Bear begins ranting to Goldilocks, thinking his place in the story will be usurped by Oliver. The baby begins holding out his arms and crying, but Telly and Goldilocks can't find what he wants while Baby Bear chooses to ignore the situation. They then realize it's Baby Bear that Oliver wants. He moves toward the carriage, and Oliver stops crying and begins rubbing himself softly on Baby Bear's hand. Moved, Baby Bear finally begins to appreciate Oliver when he sees he loves him.

SCENE 6 Mama Bear arrives back and takes instant notice of Oliver. Feeling left out again, he begins drifting away. Mama Bear confronts him and he explains how he feels. She explains to him that they still love him, but Oliver needs attention since he's a baby. Baby Bear doesn't need as much attention because he's older and can do more things on his own. Mama Bear reassures him that no matter how old he gets, he'll always be their baby bear. As they hug and play with Oliver some more, Big Bird announces the sponsors, as well as the progress of Slimey's spaceship to the moon.
COMING SOON Coming soon on Sesame Street: "There's a stwing thief loose on Sesame Stweet," says Baby Bear, "I'm gonna catch this good-for-nothin' and get my stwing back!"

  • Baby Bear would later go through a similar situation when his sister, Curly Bear, is born in season 34.
