SCENE 1 As a little red bird twitters nearby, Baby Bear works on his collage, Still Life with Porridge, in the yard. He notes, however, that the real porridge he used for it is no longer hot and thinks adding something above to make steam lines will work effectively. He takes his favorite piece of red string, which he calls "Mr. Stringo," and decides to add it to his picture. While he applies the paste, his string disappears! Baby Bear begins to freak out: “This cannot be happening in a civilized society!”
