Sweet and Elite is the ninth episode of the second season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the thirty-fifth episode overall. In this episode, Rarity visits Canterlot and ends up making friends with several elite figures in the city. When her Ponyville friends decide to host a birthday celebration at the same time as an exclusive garden party, however, Rarity must decide which one to attend.
Summary
Staying at Canterlot Castle
In the Canterlot palace, Princess Celestia shows an ecstatic Rarity the spacious room that she will be staying in during her visit to the city, explaining that Twilight Sparkle requested it for her.
While sitting at a cafe with Opalescence sometime later, Rarity determines to thank Twilight by making her a dress for her upcoming birthday. She is soon approached by Jet Set and Upper Crust, who compliment her hat and ask where she got it. Rarity's response is interrupted when Hayseed Turnip Truck recognizes her while cleaning a nearby window and eagerly greets her, revealing that she lives in Ponyville. Put off by her country origin, Jet Set and Upper Crust walk away in disdain.
Becoming popular
Rarity returns to her room and, incensed at the earlier exchange, draws up a sophisticated design for Twilight's dress before heading out to shop for materials. She accidentally collides with Fancy Pants on her way back and starts to apologize, though the expensive dress materials and mention of her castle suite pique his interest, and he ends up inviting her to join him and his companions in a VIP box to watch the Wonderbolts Derby later that day.
Deciding to put off work on Twilight's dress, Rarity joins Fancy Pants and his entourage at the derby. She impresses the company by correctly predicting the winner contrary to their expectations and reveals how Rainbow Dash gave her insight on the racers' abilities. When they ask who Rainbow Dash is, Rarity convinces them that she's the Wonderbolts' trainer, causing Fancy Pants to cheer her as his favorite party guest.

Fancy Pants' entourage take a liking to Rarity and invite her to attend various high-society events. Though eager to finish Twilight's dress, Rarity worries that refusing the invitations would jeopardize her reputation and decides to accept them. She sings a song about her soaring popularity among the elite of the city, though upon arriving back at her castle suite in the evening, she manages to assemble only the base of Twilight's dress before retiring to bed.
The parties
The next morning, as Rarity prepares to head back to Ponyville, she receives an invitation from Jet Set and Upper Crust to attend the exclusive Canterlot garden party. Her initial excitement is dampened upon realizing that the event coincides with Twilight's birthday, though she ultimately decides to accept the garden party invitation and pens a letter to Twilight falsely claiming that Opalescence is too sick to travel.
On the day of the garden party, Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Twilight Sparkle surprise Rarity by showing up at her door just as she is about to leave for the event. Twilight explains how they decided to move her birthday party to Canterlot so that Rarity could attend. After quickly drenching Opalescence in hot water to make her look ill, Rarity lets her friends into her suite, where Twilight finds her dress and praises its simplicity.
The Mane Six walk over to the Canterlot Castle ballroom for the birthday celebration. Rarity sees that the Canterlot garden party is being held just outside and, over the course of the evening, moves between the two events several times to appear as if attending both. She draws suspicion after reentering the ballroom with a croquet mallet but convinces her friends that she was only mingling with the elite to promote her boutique for the upcoming Grand Galloping Gala. As Rarity heads back out to the garden party, Rainbow Dash suggests they tag along and show off how to party "Ponyville style".
Rarity looks on in horror as her friends start butting in on the various garden party activities and frustrating the other guests in the process. As Twilight dances with abandon to her own music, Fancy Pants approaches her and asks where she got her dress. Rarity tries to interject, though Twilight eventually reveals that Rarity both made the simple design and hails from Ponyville, stunning the garden party attendees. After a moment of hesitation, Rarity confirms her association with her friends and declares that they are the most important ponies she knows. Jet Set and Upper Crust start to belittle them but change their mind when Fancy Pants calls the ponies "charmingly rustic" and asks Rarity to introduce him to them.
Back at the castle, Rarity begins to write about her Canterlot visit in a friendship report when Princess Celestia shows up to hear it in person. Rarity observes how you should always be proud of your home and friends and remember their formative role in your life, no matter where you end up.

- Fancy Pants: Bravo, Rarity! I say, how did you know Fleetfoot would be victorious?
- Rarity: My friend Rainbow Dash talks about her all the time. She says what Fleetfoot lacks in size, she makes up for in speed.
- Silver Frames: And who is this 'Rainbow Dash'?
- Rarity: Uh... [gulps] Why... she's... she's the... the Wonderbolts' trainer, of course.
- Fancy Pants: Staying at Canterlot Castle, and she knows the Pegasus training the Wonderbolts. I told you all this was an important pony.
- Rarity: Garden party, here I come!
- Rest of main cast: Surprise!
- Rarity: [gasps]
- Twilight Sparkle: When I told the princess that I was moving the party to Canterlot, she was kind enough to offer us the Canterlot Castle ballroom!

- Rarity: Fancy Pants?! Where?! Ahh, I mean, where did you find the time to put up all these decorations? Ha-ha...
- Applejack: How come y'all aren't doing any gardening? This is a garden party, isn't it?
