Summary
Gummy's birthday party

Pinkie Pie invites each of her friends to Gummy's one-year birthday party via a singing telegram. Exhausted on finishing her route, she determines to hand out written invitations next time.
Rarity, Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash join Pinkie on the upper floor of Sugarcube Corner to celebrate with refreshments, dancing, and games. The party goes well aside from a few incidents, and as Pinkie's friends head home for the night, Twilight remarks that they should party again soon.
Secrets and Lies

Early the next morning, Twilight is awoken when Pinkie Pie knocks on the door of the Golden Oak Library and invites her to an "after-birthday party" taking place that afternoon. Using her magic to hastily gather a pile of books behind her, Twilight claims she can’t go because she needs to study. Pinkie proceeds to invite the rest of her friends, but they each provide an excuse for why they cannot attend: Applejack needs to pick apples, Rarity needs to clean her hair, and Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash need to house-sit for a bear.

Returning to her upstairs bedroom at Sugarcube Corner, Pinkie begins to doubt her friends' excuses. She spies Twilight sneaking into the shop below and, using a tin can telephone to eavesdrop, learns that Twilight is hiding something from her. When Twilight leaves the bakery with a package, Pinkie dons a disguise and follows her to a meetup with Rarity, who then carries the package to Fluttershy. While shadowing the ponies, Pinkie overhears them admit to fabricating excuses and express eagerness to evade her. After she accidentally scares away Fluttershy with her disguise, Pinkie wonders if her friends liked her parties in the first place.
Rainbow Dash walks by moments later and greets Pinkie before remembering the excuse she gave earlier and fleeing in panic. Pinkie gives chase and demands to know what her friends are up to, and after several failed attempts to hide, Rainbow heads to Sweet Apple Acres. Warning Applejack of Pinkie's imminent arrival, the two rush inside the barn just as Pinkie shows up and knocks on the door. Applejack answers but refuses when Pinkie asks to look inside, claiming the building is being renovated. Pinkie leaves after a long stare-off, prompting a sigh of relief from Applejack and the rest of Pinkie's friends, who had been gathered inside the barn.
Pinkie's "real" friends

Convinced that Spike will reveal what is going on, Pinkie brings him to Sugarcube Corner and offers him a plate of gems in exchange for information. When Spike provides only mundane responses, Pinkie eventually demands that he confirm her suspicions:
- "Tell me that my friends are all lying to me and avoiding me because they don't like my parties and they don't want to be my friends anymore!"
- — Pinkie Pie
Spike repeats the claim directly back to Pinkie, causing her to feel an initial rally of validation that quickly gives way to sad realization.

Later that day, Pinkie hosts a party at Sugarcube Corner with a group of inanimate objects that she manually voices and puppeteers. She enacts a dialogue where the objects disparage her pony friends and convince her not to speak with them or invite them to another party ever again. In the middle of this, Rainbow Dash enters and apologizes for her earlier rush before suggesting that Pinkie come with her to Sweet Apple Acres. Pinkie refuses and continues animating her "real" friends to support her, eventually prompting Rainbow to "do this the hard way."
Surprise

Rainbow drags Pinkie to the barn at Sweet Apple Acres and opens the door, revealing party decorations inside as the rest of the Mane Six shout "surprise". To their alarm, Pinkie angrily accuses her friends of kicking her out of the group and throwing a farewell party. When she cites how they've been lying to her and avoiding her all day, the friends explain that they were only trying to keep the party secret so it would be a surprise. Twilight points out the happy birthday cake that she brought from Sugarcube Corner, and after Pinkie looks around at the presents and decor, she suddenly remembers it's her birthday and returns to her normal self, pulling her friends into a group hug before apologizing for her doubt.
All is forgiven, and as Spike and the ponies enjoy the party, Twilight narrates a letter to Princess Celestia about how good friends will have your best interests at heart, and that you shouldn't assume the worst of them.
Quotes
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Pinkie Pie: Aw, it's just a boring old apple. Don't worry, there are plenty of other surprises in there.
- Rainbow Dash: What kind of surprises?
- Pinkie Pie: I can't tell you that, silly. Then it wouldn't be a surprise.
- Twilight Sparkle: Great party though. We should do this again soon.
- Pinkie Pie: [gasp] We should do this again soon!
- Twilight Sparkle: Oh, gosh. I wish I could make it, but I've gotten a bit behind in my studies. I've really gotta hit the books.
- Pinkie Pie: I understand. Your studies come first. But don't worry, we'll be sure to save you some cake.
- Twilight Sparkle: Please do.
- Pinkie Pie: Oh, and Twilight, you shouldn't hit the books. You should really just read them.
- Applejack: Uh, well, I... I... uh... I don't think I can make it 'cause... uh... I have to... uh... uh, you know what, I... uh... pick apples! Yep, apples! 'Cause that's what we do! With the... apples. We, uh... pick 'em!
- Spike: Anything else I can do for you, most beautiful one?
- Rarity: Hmm... perhaps you could take a bath. How do I put this delicately? You smell like a rotten apple core that’s been wrapped in moldy hay and dipped in dragon perspiration.
- Pinkie Pie: Rarity has to wash her hair? Applejack has to pick apples? Twilight is behind on her studies and has to hit the books? The more I think about it, the more those are starting to sound like... [gasp] excuses!
- Pinkie Pie: You're not understanding me! I want you to confess!
- Spike: Confess?
- Pinkie Pie: Confess!
- Spike: I'm the one who spilled juice all over Twilight's copy of "Magical Mysteries and Practical Potions"!
- Pinkie Pie: And?
- Spike: And I'm the one who used up all the hot water in Ponyville yesterday when I took a seven-hour bubble bath!
- Pinkie Pie: Aaand?
- Spike: And sometimes... when no one's around... I do this: Lookin' good, Spike! Lookin' real good!
- Rainbow Dash: I'm just glad I haven't been replaced by a bucket of turnips.
- Twilight Sparkle: Huh?
- Rainbow Dash: You don't wanna know.
