The Relay Straight Yin-Yang (駅伝ストレートの明と暗 Ekiden sutorēto no meitoan) is the fifteenth episode of the MF Ghost anime adaptation, alongside it being the 3rd episode of the anime's Second Season.
Synopsis
Kanata, not bothered by the wet road surface, passed Ohtani and then Taylor. They caught up with Sakamoto's Audi and closed in on the 3rd place group, which was dominated by high-powered machines. The 3rd place group enters the Ekiden Straight, a straight line that runs along the shores of Lake Ashi, and engages in a heated battle, splashing with water. Further behind them, Aiba's Nissan GT-R and Ohtani's AMG-GTR begin a head-to-head battle. GTR between Japan and Germany, which side will win?
Plot
The episode opens with Marie changing the leaderboards and receiving a question from Uehara immediately after. She is asked about what she looks for in her man, to which she replies that she doesn't care as long as he is honest with her. After she's done with the question, Tanaka notes Marie's plump body compared to the other Angels. His personal investigation into this concluded that Joyu likes this type of women, which amuses Ikeda and angers Fumihiro.
Meanwhile, the pack of racers is entering sector 2, with the leading group building a sizeable gap. Kanata is following Taylor and Sakamoto and Ikeda notes that performance like this is not possible without a good mechanic. At the back of the pack, Kakeru is struggling with his car and can't pick up the pace likely due to his suspension being too soft, a mistake on Yamatani's part.
At the 10th place group, Aiba is planning his attack on Yanagida. They come up on a uphill straight after a hairpin, where Shun makes his successful overtake, further explained by Ikeda on the broadcast as difference between FR and 4WD traction in those conditions. Ren is called to change the leaderboard and gets a surprise question from Uehara, asking what masculinity means to her. To Ren, masculinity comes from true kindness.
Back at the middle of the pack, Kanata is planning an attack on Taylor, noting stable performance of his Porsche. This duel is decided in a corner, where Kanata blocks Taylor's line from the outside which makes the Porsche slow down. After this spectacular overtake, Ikeda points our attention to similarities between Beckenbauer, Sawatari and Kanata: they all have been studying racing in European academies and have more experience in the rain than the other participants, which can explain their superior performance in this race. He makes an example of Kanata, whose home track, Donington Park, is known for being an old track with drainage problems, which makes racing in the wet there extremely tough.
During a 3-way communication between the Yajikita siblings and Yamatani, Nozomi learns that Kakeru is having problems and plans to take on Yanagida without her brother. Meanwhile, at the leading group Sawatari unfolds his plan to take on Beckenbauer, observing him the entire first lap and making a move on him on the second. At that time, Kanata already catches up to Yudai. Feeling the pressure of a 2-liter NA on his tail, Yudai speeds up and the two catch up to the third place group in no time. This shocks Ogata, who is monitoring the race at the booth.
At the broadcast, Ikeda explains the importance of electronic stability systems in cars. Despite those systems having a toll on tires and brakes, in these rainy conditions, they take off a lot of burden on drivers and disabling them might be a bad idea. Hearing this, Ogata starts to worry even more, since the 86 has those systems turned off on Kanata's request.
As the leaders pass the Relay straight, the gap between the next group is the length of the straight itself. Daigo tries to overtake Maezono, but doesn't have enough traction to pull ahead. As the next group enters the straight, Aiba makes his move on Ohtani. In a battle between 2 GTRs, the Nissan comes on top. Both overtake attempts were decided on difference in cars' layouts, which is explained by Ikeda. Kyoko is tasked with changing the leaderboard after Aiba's move and she is asked about her perfect man. She prefers a dumber man, saying that men like this can be sweet and a little goofy and can make a woman happy.
As the cars enter the uphill section after the Relay straight, Tanaka expects the 86 to fall behind. However, after the section ends, Kanata is still keeping up with Yudai's R8.
