The 4x4 Attack (4WDの攻勢, 4WD no kōsei) is the fourteenth episode of the MF Ghost anime adaptation, alongside it being the 2nd episode of the anime's Second Season.
Synopsis
The second MFG race, the Ashinoko GT, will be held in the pouring rain of June. Kanata is undaunted by wet conditions and says that rain is his ally. Ren watches closely as he starts from 10th place after qualifying. Immediately after the start of the race, the rankings changed dramatically due to the attacks of high-power 4WD machines that have superior traction. Will Kanata, who operates the FR machine 86, be able to find a chance to win in the rough road conditions...?
Plot

On another trip to Kamakura, Ren is talking to Kanata and mentions the word "yabai", which confuses him. She gives him a couple of contradicting examples, which puzzle Kanata even more. On their way back at the Enoshima railroad station, Kanata mentions he's getting his first paycheque from the part-time work and wants to take the Saionji family to dinner. Ren is surprised and agrees to help him with picking a restaurant.

Later, they visit a seafood restaurant to try shirasu-don. The dish is not as Kanata expected, but he's pleasantly surprised after tasting it. As he asks Ren about what "shirasu" is, she is unable to clarify it, and the owner of the restaurant overhears their conversation and explains the term. After finishing the meal, the owner sends them off, wishing Kanata good luck on Ashinoko GT, which takes Kanata and Ren by surprise. More than 30 million people worldwide now know Kanata's face, something that he is not used to.

At he MFG Headquarters, Yamashita is telling Fumihiro about the course records Beckenbauer and Sawatari set during qualifiers. Joyu asks if they beat the "phantom' course record set by Keisuke and it turns out they just barely improved on it. After asking Yamashita about the weather conditions on the day of the race, which are expected to be rainy, Joyu recalls Takumi's impeccable skill to race in the rain and wonders if his student inherited this. Rain also concerns Ogata (at his garage) and Ren (at school), who are worried about the weather during the race day tomorrow.

The next day, the broadcast of MFG starts and Tanaka is introducing the guest commentator of this round, Ryuji Ikeda. In 202X, Ikeda is a chairman of Zero Academy, member of Odawara City Council and a priest at his family's temple. At the paddock, Ogata and Kanata are talking about the weather. Ogata is deeply worried and thinks that the race should be cancelled, but Kanata reassures him, saying that the rain is and equalizer and that it is on his side.

As the Angels' mini-concert and driver's meeting conclude, racers are getting into their cars and waiting for the start. Ikeda is talking about all the difficulties of racing in the rain and the Divine Fifteen are on their way. As the last car, #23, passes the toll gate, the race officially starts. Cars with 4WD have an advantage over their competitors and make overtakes right from the start: Oishi overtakes Maezono, Yudai overtakes Taylor, Aiba overtakes Kitahara. Yudai is thinking about the how powerful 4WD is in the rain despite the handicap imposed by Ryo Takahashi and Moe and Mami are asked to change positions on the leaderboard.

At the lead group, Beckenbauer and Sawatari have a thought exchange. Both are certain they won't lose to each other in conditions like this. In the middle of the pack, Maezono is planning to take on two crowning brands of Italy, Lamborghini and Ferrari and wants to show everyone the true power of his Honda. While that happens, Tanaka asks Ikeda about the death area of Ashinoko GT in the rain. Ikeda explains that wet volcanic ash is going to make the road even slippier than before and drivers would have to be extra careful. As the pack enter the zone, Oishi oversteers and goes wide in to the corner and Maezono takes advantage of that and makes a successful overtake.

Continuing through the death zone, Yanagida makes comments about Kanata's lack of drifting compared to his qualifying run. Nozomi struggles with her car sliding all the time, but finds racing like this fun. Back at the commentators' booth, Ikeda also points out Kanata's driving style, which hasn't changed through in the death area and is very different from his time attack run. He's scared to realize that Kanata is only warming up for the race ahead. As the pack passes the Kojiri Pass junction, Ohtani is struggling with stability systems of his GT R. However, he is confident he can block Kanata, who is right on his tail, by closing the gap on his corner entry. To his shock, Kanata goes on the outside, overtaking Ohtani to his and Yanagida's shock.

Differences from the Manga
- The scene in Chapter 62, where Ren unsuccessfully punches Kanata after they pray at the shrine is not present in the anime.
- In the manga, the viewer count for the Ashinoko GT race is at 31.2 Million, whilst in the anime, it's only at 30.12 million.
Trivia
- During the scene that showed all of the MFG drivers in there respective cars' interiors, Takamitsu Kyogoku was the only driver to not been shown physically in the interior of his car. This confirmed that he did not get a major unique design in the anime.
- An error can be found at the 10:07 mark, where the brakes on Kanata's 86 oddly revert back to stock.
- At the 11:17 and 11:50 mark, the grey MFG bus featured in the episode has a "39-86" license plate, which can be translated as "Thank you, 86". ("サンキューハチロク"/ San-kyu hachi-roku).
- The scene at Ogata Cars features a black Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III in the background. This might be an easter egg teasing the guest commentator for Round 4, Kyoichi Sudo.
Quotes
