- "Sigma, you should have studied the blueprints closer! There is only one Zero!"
- ―Zero, after destroying his copy, Mega Man X2
The fake Zero is a copy of Zero that appeared briefly in Mega Man X2, where if X collected all three of Zero's parts from the X-Hunters, a Zero created by Sigma appears in the last stage, and Sigma tries to convince X that he is the real Zero. The fake Zero has the same black-hued armor as Black Zero, but with gray hair, red forehead gem, and silver rimmed leg armor. He is destroyed by the real Zero shortly after his appearance. If the game is completed without collecting all of Zero's parts, a black Zero will appear after the credits and reveal the Capcom logo.
The fake Zero appeared as a secret boss in the game's mobile phone port, which was only released in Japan. After completing the game in Free Mode, he appears in the X-Hunter room from the Central Computer Stage in Ranking Mode. He fights in the same way as the original Zero, being only a palette swap. He teleports away after he's defeated.[1]
Other appearances
- The false Zero also had a cameo appearance in Mega Man X5's opening scene.
- He is the secret boss from the X Special World in Rockman Xover, and attacks with a rotating slash. He is called Black Zero in the boss battle and "Deep Red Black Zero" (深紅のブラックゼロ Shinku no Burakku Zero) in his Battle Memory.
- The false Zero is one of the stamps in the manga cassette from Rockman X3 Buster Battle.
- In Dragon Poker, the original Black Zero appeared alongside Neo Sigma in the Rockman X2 event stages, representing the fake Zero.

Trivia
- In Bandai's Rockman X cards, the fake Zero has blue hair and the forehead gem's color is the same as the original.
- The fake Zero from the Mega Armor figure series has blue hair and a green forehead gem. He was referred as "Sigma Zero" (シグマゼロ) in the September 1996 issue of Comic BomBom.[2]
- In Rockman Xover, some frames from Black Zero's rotating attack were miscolored with the blue forehead gem and blond hair of the original Zero.[3]
- Although he holds a purple saber in his Battle Memory art, it is still green in his sprites.
- He was also referred as "True Blue Black Zero" (真蒼のブラックゼロ) in the details from his Battle Memory's gacha.[4] "Deep Red" and "True Blue" match the forehead gems from the fake and real Zero, the latter's use for the fake likely being a mistake.
- In Marvel vs. Capcom 3, when Zero faces another Zero he will say, "Another soulless copy," which is most likely a reference to his doppelgangers such as the fake Zero and Zero Nightmare.
