A Medawatch, known in Japanese as a Medarotch (メダロッチ), is a multifunctional device or software used by a Medafighter to manage their Medabot. Medawatches store Medals so that Medafighters may transport their Medabot from anywhere. It also allows switching parts and Medals, and communication between the Medafighter and the assigned Medabot. Medawatches also tell time, like normal watches.
The Medawatch's design varies depending of the media and user. In most media, the Medawatch is a digital wrist watch that can be opened to place a Medal inside. From Medarot DS to Medarot 9, it is a free smartphone application. Both versions appear in Medarot S: Unlimited Nova, the term Medawatch being described in the term list as being any mobile terminal or software from the Medabot Corporation that can be used to manage Medabots.
In the games
The Medawatch acts as a menu that allows the player to customize Medabots in the team by changing parts and Medals, and see the list of parts available.
Except for illustrations, Medawatches were not seen in the first Medarot game, and Medabots are managed with a mobile phone (ケイタイ keitai).
During Medarot 2 and its GBA remake, a new Medawatch that enables the Medaforce was released. Unknown to Ikki, his first Medawatch was this new version, making him the only Medafighter able to use the Medaforce for some time. After defeating Squidguts in Mt. Odoro, Ikki learns about the new Medawatch model when it is released, and all characters become able to use the Medaforce.
In Medarot 3, Ikki lost all data from his Medawatch due to the magnetic storm caused by Electra, losing everything he had obtained in the previous game.
In the manga
In manga adaptations, the Medawatch is similar to their game counterparts.
In the first Medarot manga, the first Medawatch model seen lacked a screen and had an antenna, and the Medal placed on it is visible. It gives the time by voice command, presumably being given by the Medal on it. Besides the wrist watch version, the Principal was shown with a pocket watch version. Later, before Hikaru went to the world tournament, he obtained a new Medawatch model with a design similar to the games and anime. A single Medawatch is shown to be able to manage up to three Medabots. It can also eject the Medal from the Medabot's Tinpet.
In the anime
In the anime, the Medawatch is similar to the earlier games, being able to transfer Medabots and replace parts. To transfer a complete Medabot, a Medal must be on the Medawatch. It can also eject the Medal from the Medabot's Tinpet.
The Medawatch is usually depicted as being able to control only one Medabot, with additional Medawatches being required for extra Medabots, this being mainly depicted with Shrimplips and the Mystery Medafighter. However, Masa was shown commanding multiple Skelbots with a single Kilowatch.
The Medawatch has a limited range, being unable to contact the Medabot or use functions like transport and Virtual Eye when the Medabot is out or range. There are also devices that can prevent the use of the transport function.[1]
Medabots anime
The Medawatch appeared in the Medabots anime in multiple colors, with functions similar to the games.
The Medawatch can only transports the Tinpet and parts, and the Medal must be inside the Medawatch to transport the Medabot. After activation, a beam of light is pointed to where the Medabot will be transported, and a ball of energy appears in the spot, with the Medabot appearing from it. Afterwards, the Medafighter removes the Medal from the Medawatch and places it in the Medabot to activate it.
An exception to this is Joe Swihan's Wigwamo, who was modified to be able to transport while the Medal is in the body. Joe calls this technique Destroy Mirage, with Wigwamo being able to make surprise attacks from any direction and quickly evade attacks.[2] Of note, in the episode Mystery Medabot, the Rubberobo Gang's Foxuno was already active after being transported, being unknown if this was an oversight or if they had a similar technology.
In Metabee's Last Stand, Dr. Aki created a giant Medawatch to command the Giant Metabee. The Medafighter wears it on the waist like a belt.
Medabots Spirit
In the beginning of Medabots Spirit, a new version of the Medawatch called Medawatch Advance (メダロッチアドヴァンス, Medarotch Advance in Japanese) was released, with most characters replacing their Medawatch by it. The Medawatch Advance has new functions, such as the Virtual Eye, which allows the Medafighter to see what the Medabot is seeing, and Medabots and parts are transported faster than the previous model. Rogue Medafighters have a Kilobot counterpart known as Kilowatch[3] (デスメダロッチ, Death Medarotch in Japanese) that has the same functions.
Besides transporting faster, Medabots and Kilobots are already active after being transported,[4] suggesting that the Medal is transported to the body as part of the Medawatch Advance's upgrades. However, a Medal still needs to be inside the Medawatch to use transport,[5] and there were a few cases of a Medabot still being inactive after transport, requiring the Medal to be removed from the Medawatch and placed in the Medabot.[6]
Toys
The Medawatch was released as part of some toys, such as being the remote control from two moving Metabee (Saikachi) figures from Takara,[7] and four simple Medawatch miniatures were included with a set of Medabot figures from Bandai so other figures can use them to become their Medafighters.[8]
