Swirlypod

Super Mario

Swirlypods are enemies in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Profile

Physical description

Swirlypods are snails with light green skin, big eyes, a dark pink shell with swirls on the left and right sides each, and antennae that are dark green at both the tip and the bottom.

Swirlypods have larger variants, Big Swirlypods, which have little difference than them other than being a larger size.

Behavior

Though they look vastly different than regular snails, Swirlypods still act similar to them, by moving slowly on the ground, walls, and other surfaces. If a Swirlypod is stomped, it launches out of its shell, much like how a stomped Koopa Troopa becomes a Beach Koopa. The Swirlypod becomes dizzy upon being launched out, but after a while, it attempts to re-enter its shell.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Swirlypods are first encountered in Bulrush Coming Through!, but they also appear in other levels such as Swamp Pipe Crawl. Swirlypods are prey of Maw-Maws, and if one is eaten, the Maw-Maw spits its shell back out, which the player's character can then use in a very similar manner to a Koopa Shell.

Behind the scenes

Etymology

Their name is a portmanteau of "swirl" and "gastropod," a classification of snails and slugs.

In Japanese, Swirlypods are generically referred to as "snails."
