Shemum (シーマム Shīmamu) are Underworld enemies that debuted in the original Kid Icarus.
Physical Appearance
In the original Kid Icarus, the Shemum is a small snake with blue scales, a pink underbelly, and pink eyes. It has a fang protruding from both corners of its mouth, and a pair of tiny wings on its backside.
In Of Myths and Monsters, it appears to be a wingless, green snake with blue eyes and a tan underbelly.
In Uprising, the Shemum reverts to its appearance from the original Kid Icarus with some minor differences—its underbelly is now light blue, its wings are now golden with blue trimming, and it has a single magenta stripe on its head and around the tip of its tail.
Appearances
Kid Icarus
“Lives in the snake pit. An evolved snake monster with wings. Watch out! It's extremely dangerous. In spite of looking small, its fangs are filled with a powerful, nasty poison. It often roams around in groups.” |
Shemum only appear when Pit passes by one of their vases, to which they spawn in groups of four. These vases are typically found attached to ceilings, and are invulnerable to attacks. When a Shemum lands on a surface, it will automatically target Pit and slither toward him.
Despite its description in the game manual, it does not possess the ability to poison Pit.

Kid Icarus: Uprising
Shemum have the same strategy as they did before—to spawn from their vases, lock onto their targets, and slither toward them. However, they can now lunge at their opponents and inflict poison on them. In addition, their vases are now vulnerable to melee attacks, and they only spawn one Shemum at a time.
Captain N: The Game Master
A Shemum briefly appears in the episode "Videolympic." When King Hippo opens a bag, a Shemum pops out of it and laughs, causing him to drop the bag.
Idol Description
Shemum
These winged, poisonous snakes leap out of vases to attack enemies, making up for their lack of strength with sheer numbers. These vases are invulnerable to ranged shots, so use melee strikes or attack items to destroy them.

Trivia
- The Shemum is possibly based on the various feathered serpents of mythology.
- The Japanese name シーマム (''Shīmamu'') is likely a back slang rearrangement of the Japanese word マムシ ("Mamushi"), a type of Japanese Pit Viper.
