Ban-Ur is the tribal homeland of the nomadic Banuk tribe.
Description
Ban-Ur is an inhospitable region described by the Carja scholar Aram as "the most uncomfortable place in the world". The land in Ban-Ur has geothermal properties such as mists and geysers, described by Aram as "billows of steam that erupt from the earth".[1] The White Teeth Chieftain describes Ban-Ur as having "black hills"[2] while Aratak mentions the tall cliffs.[3]
Whilst a nomadic people, the Banuk rarely make camp outside of Ban-Ur; the exceptions to this general rule are the Banuk Encampment, the Cut, and the Malmstrom.
Location
Ban-Ur is located north of the Cut and the Sacred Lands, northeast of the Sundom and east of the Claim, separated from the Claim by a few mountain ranges.[4] Ourea also describes Ban-Ur as being "a month's march" away from the Malmstrom.[5] Yariki notes that the fastest way from Ban-Ur to Meridian is through the Cut, as opposed to travelling through the Claim.[6]
Based on the location of the remains of the Roosevelt Arch in the Cut (the landmark that is furthest north in the real world), which is near the southern border of the present day state of Montana, Ban-Ur is either located in that same state or further north.
Wildlife/Machines
Burgrend describes Ban-Ur as being filled with wild animals,[7] with the only known animals living there being white rabbits, while machines there consist of Grazers[1] and Tallnecks.[8]
History
According to a Banuk story, the White Teeth werak were the first to find and settle in Ban-Ur while searching for a homeland, but became trapped against a glacier in the Knifetrail by a snowstorm for four days and nights. Once the snowstorm cleared, they followed a Tallneck to the land they named Ban-Ur.[8]
Ban-Ur was visited by Rost during his journey as a Death-Seeker, searching for the twelve outlanders that invaded the Sacred Lands.[9]
The Derangement
According to the Banuk shaman Siluk, significant changes are taking place in Ban-Ur due to disagreements between hunters and shamans about how to respond to the changes in the world. With the hunters welcoming the new harsher world and not wanting things to return to the way they were, and the shamans finding themselves able to explain less and less, as a result, many shamans have been exiled from Ban-Ur.[10]
Due to the Banuk's resistance and the harsh geography, the Carja were unable to reach Ban-Ur during the Red Raids, although the territory to the south was heavily impacted by the raids. After the Red Raids ended, the Banuk were open to reconciliation with the Carja, allowing Carja envoys to and from Ban-Ur,[11] including allowing Aram to visit Ban-Ur to allow the Carja to learn about the region.[1]
