That little alien knew more about being a human than you ever will. His name was Sonic. This was his home... and he was my friend.

Trust me when I tell you there will be a moment in your life when your powers will be needed. But you don't choose that moment. That moment chooses you.

Appearance

Tom is an adult man with blue eyes and short brown hair. He wears his police uniform while on duty but can be seen in more casual clothes during his time away from work.

Personality

Tom is a responsible, dedicated and moral man who works dutifully as the sheriff of Green Hills and is also a caring husband towards his wife Maddie. He is generally serious albeit friendly as well, and possesses a penchant for dry sarcasm and lame humor. When off-duty, he can sometimes humorously go over the top, such as when he planned to use Maddie's tranquillizer gun to deal with what he believed to be some raccoons. While he gets along with everyone he meets, or at least attempts to, his sister-in-law Rachel held a potent disliking of him for unclear reasons prior to meeting Sonic. Regardless of his faults, Tom is a good human being and a person Sonic looks up to.

As a police officer, Tom felt undermined with his role as Green Hills' sheriff, admitting to Sonic that he's always felt more like a babysitter than an actual cop. This is what motivated him to earn a position in San Francisco's police department, something that he nearly went through with. After meeting Sonic, Tom finds himself having to take responsibility and did save him from Dr. Robotnik. While he soon tried to cut ties with him, he accepted that it was his fault that Sonic was stranded on Earth without his Portal Rings, leading him to help the Hedgehog and forming a close bond during their travels.

Tom later displays more caring qualities, being genial and inspiring. After realizing Sonic's loneliness, he would strive further to help him and later openly stated that the Hedgehog is his friend. He would later help Sonic defeat Robotnik and even accepted Sonic's nickname as the "Donut Lord". Later on, him and Maddie gave Sonic a new home inside their attic, making him a part of the Wachowski family and becoming a fatherly figure to him.

While he has his funny moments, Tom is quite mature and his serious nature often serves to ground Sonic's more daring and reckless attitude, though he can find himself going along with the Hedgehog if need be or in times of duress.

Powers and Abilities

Being a trained police officer and the sheriff of Green Hills, Tom is physically strong and has quick reflexes as he was able to knock Dr. Robotnik out with one punch and later evaded fire from one of the doctor's Badnik drones. He was also able to hold his own in a bar fight that Sonic started.

He is also quite intelligent and resourceful, as he was able to utilize Sonic's Portal Rings, despite never using them before in his life. This allowed him to sneak up on Dr. Robotnik and flank him from behind, getting a few good hits before the doctor managed to throw him off.

History

Sonic the Hedgehog

Tom Wachowski is the latest in a long line of Wachowski police sheriffs that have served and protected the peaceful town of Green Hills for generations. However, due to the town's peaceful nature, Tom has never had to deal with any major crimes, causing him to become bored with his job and using what free time he has on duty to find ways to entertain himself. Tom would usually find amusement in treating a box of donuts as people and eating the ones that 'step out of line'. He eventually applied to join the San Francisco police department to prove himself as an officer of the law and get the chance to save someone's life.

One night, a power outage occurs and Tom gets a call from his friend and colleague, Wade Whipple who starts panicking, but Tom was able to calm him down before hanging up when he sees the blue quill that he found the other day is now glowing inside. The following day, while Tom was at home, he notices a garbage can next to his shed had been knocked over and believed it to be the work of troublesome raccoons. He prepares his tranquillizer gun to incapacitate the animals. But instead, he finds Sonic the Hedgehog taking refuge inside his shed. Terrified, he shoots Sonic in the thigh which renders him unconscious, but also causes the hedgehog to lose his bag of gold rings through a ring portal that he opened to San Francisco.

Tom places Sonic within a cage as he takes him into his house and figures out through the blue quill that he's the Blue Devil Crazy Carl had always been blurting about, but Sonic escapes with ease upon awakening and begs Tom for protection against the government forces searching for him, claiming it was a matter of life and death. Seeing this as his chance to save a life, Tom tells Sonic to hide upstairs just as Dr. Robotnik arrives on his doorstep to inquire about the hedgehog's whereabouts. Tom tries to convince Robotnik to leave but ends up aggravating the doctor, who threatens to have him shot if he does not reveal Sonic's exact location within the next five seconds. Luckily, Wachowski was able to knock Robotnik out with a single punch when Sonic emerges from hiding to save him.

Tom tells Sonic the way to the location, San Francisco, but Sonic was unable to go there. Because of this, Tom has to drive the car and send Sonic to San Francisco. On the way, they stop at a bar where Sonic wants to have some fun. Tom explained Sonic what a bucket list is. When Tom told Sonic about the bucket list, they tried to complete the bucket list. When they arrive at a place where Sonic can sleep, Sonic begins to sleep and Tom sees what Sonic wrote: make a real friend. Tom sees the news where he is called dangerous, which makes Tom a little bit sad and worried.

When they continue to going to the location, San Francisco, Dr. Robotnik finds them and starts attacking. Tom and Sonic fight against the robots, but one robot ruins the car and reveals itself to be a bomb. Tom and Sonic quickly try to remove the bomb from Sonic. When they finally do it, the bomb explodes and causes Sonic to temporarily pass out. Tom worries about Sonic and goes to the location where his wife, Maddie Wachowski, is at. After going there, Maddie helps Sonic to recover while Jojo gives him a new pair of shoes. Sonic wakes up, says, "Gotta go fast!", and starts to run. Tom tells Maddie about the situation, and they go to the location, San Francisco, using Rachel's car.

When they finally arrive at the location, San Francisco, Dr. Robotnik's robots find them. Sonic quickly pushes Tom and Maddie off the building, and opens a portal with his rings to save them.

At the end, Tom and Sonic defeat Dr. Robotnik when Tom uses the ring to send him to the Mushroom Planet. And then, Tom and Maddie made Sonic a new cave at their home.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

After a while, Tom takes Sonic on a boat trip and scolds him for his actions of being a vigilante and being irresponsible by showing him a newspaper on how he destroyed an entire city block while trying to stop a robbery in Seattle. Sonic tries to defend his actions by saying that the block was already messed up and that he was a hero for stopping a robbery, but Tom (rightfully) tells him that he put people in danger by disregarding their safety and that's not what heroes do. In response, Sonic tells Tom that he's not his dad and that he should stop trying to act like he is, which hurts Tom emotionally. Sonic says that he can take care of himself, until Tom tells him what being a hero is truly means: being responsible for others and whether he wants to hear this or not, he is still a kid and still has more growing up to do. Afterwards, Tom and Maddie are leaving for Hawaii to attend Rachel's wedding there, and Sonic provides them a ring portal to get there and an extra ring for Tom to use to allow them to return home after, leaving Sonic with Ozzy to watch over the house.

Tom later called Sonic to assure him not to cause any trouble and was convinced by him to relax. Meeting Randall Handel, who reminded him to work Rachel's enmity out, Tom was greeted by Rachel, who requested him to 'bury the hatchet', although threatening him if he happened to ruin her wedding. He later played volleyball with Randall and his friends and met Jojo, the ring bearer, whom he played a trick with by hiding one ring. Giving one back, Tom looked back at Randall's group, noting that Sonic too should have a squad.

At the time of Rachel and Randall's marriage, Tom was called by Sonic, who fled from an avalanche in Siberia, ordering Tom to deploy a ring immediately. Doing so, Tom throws the ring to open a portal only to find out that he only thrown the wedding ring, now realizing he had given Jojo the wrong ring back. He interrupted the wedding, having to punch Randall in order to get the portal ring. Throwing it, Tom and other participants faced a storm of snow, unleashing Sonic and an unconscious new partner of Sonic's; Miles "Tails" Prower. Sonic informs Tom and Maddie of Robotnik's return. Before he can explain more, Sonic was then stunned and taken by the Guardian Units of Nations, an anti-alien organization led by the man who offered Tom and Maddie an Olive Garden gift card; Sam Walters. He reveals that many of the participants including Randall are G.U.N. agents, shocking Rachel, and the wedding as part of "Operation Catfish." Tom tries to rescue Sonic and Tails, but Randall stops and arrests him. Tom, Sonic (now fully awake), and Tails are taken to a nearby hotel. Maddie, however, saved him and the others with help from Rachel.

Outside, Tom and the others were met by a giant green energy beam emitting from an island nearby, signifying Robotnik's reappearance. Wanting to organize a plan, Sonic instead rushed over there, taking responsibility for Tails. At that moment, Tails woke up, alerting the Wachowskis of the challenge that Sonic would soon face. And then, Tom and Maddie finally convinced Walters to help them with the situation.

Tom and Maddie returned to Green Hills with a G.U.N. helicopter, along with Walters, who was told by an agent that they had spotted Dr. Robotnik and Agent Stone in the Mean Bean Coffee Café with Wade as a hostage. Tom and the others then met Robotnik, who was now powered by the Master Emerald. And when Tom threatened to banish Robotnik from Earth again, he nevertheless unleashed his power, taking scraps of metal throughout the town to form the Giant Eggman Robot.

Upon seeing Sonic, Tails, and their new friend, Knuckles the Echidna, fly the Tornado biplane into battle, Tom and Maddie helped evacuate many inhabitants. They took a truck to head towards Sonic, who was heavily injured by Robotnik. They drove in time to save Sonic from the robot just as he retrieved the Master Emerald, but the car flipped from the punch Eggman made upon the ground. The three are nearly killed, but the broken Master Emerald forms into Sonic, transforming him into Super Sonic. And then, Super Sonic saves them just in time. Afterward, Tom and Maddie cheered him on as he defeats Robotnik.

Super Sonic descended before Tom and Maddie, who are halted by Knuckles assuming Sonic isn't the way he used to be, until he was proven wrong when he summoned chili dogs for both him and Knuckles. With Sonic settling into his original form, Tom performed a group hug with him, Maddie, and Tails. He also entitled Sonic as his and Maddie's kid. Witnessing Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles perform a power bump as an oath to protect the Master Emerald, Tom and Maddie did so as well.

Tom and Maddie later had a baseball match, assisting Sonic's friends and explaining to Tails and Knuckles to have fun. Knuckles easily wins the game by punching the ball through the scoreboard. Afterward, Team Sonic, Tom, Maddie, and Ozzy decided to go get ice cream. While Tails, Knuckles, Maddie, and Ozzy were walking to the truck, Tom spoke to Sonic, praising him for having a group of friends to grow up with, which was something that he once dream of Sonic having. In return, Sonic states that he has a lot more than that, and calls him "Dad," much to Tom's happiness. In a race to the truck, Tom left with the others to go get ice cream.

Knuckles

Despite being absent from the show, Tom appears in a flashback, and he gets mentioned a few times. Prior of the events of the show, Tom took a trip outside of Green Hills. He also gave Wade a master key to keep him from being handcuffed after several incidents.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Tom, Maddie, Tails, Knuckles, and Ozzy sets up a surprise party for Sonic to celebrate the anniversary of the day he came to Earth. While setting up, Tails and Knuckles distracts Sonic by throwing a race to keep him distracted. Once Sonic realized that Tails used holograms in the race, he went back to the camp site to see that his friends and family are throwing a surprise party for him. They explained how Sonic had changed all their lives when he arrived on the planet, deeply moving him. And with that, the celebration began.

During the party, Sonic finds his old cave, and Tom goes with him to check it out. Sonic shows Tom a drawing of him and Longclaw he made to remember her by as he still missed her deeply. Tom reassures him that he was able to fight through the pain of losing her and never lost sight of what was important in his heart.

However, as they are roasting marshmallows at their campsite, they are approached by the arrival of a G.U.N. helicopter carrying G.U.N. Director Rockwell, who requests Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles' help as they have a situation in Tokyo. As the newly-dubbed Team Sonic head with Rockwell through a ring portal to Tokyo, Tom and Maddie waved goodbye, reminding them to make good choices. After they left, Tom, Maddie, and Ozzy return to their house.

While they get to relax at home, the team teleported back to the house using a ring portal and recruits Tom and Maddie for a secret mission which they immediately accept as they got bored. The goal is to get the second Eclipse Cannon keycard, which is the same one that Walters gave to Sonic, before Dr. Robotnik, who is revealed to be alive, does so. Tails explains the plan: Tom and Maddie's task is to infiltrate G.U.N. Headquarters in London and plug Tails' USB drive into the G.U.N. server room. This will allow Tails to hack into and disable the HQ's various defenses guarding the way to the vault where the second keycard is. Sonic will run in to recover the keycard, and Knuckles will standby if he needs to come in to help if the plan goes south.

The team carries out their plan in London. Tom and Maddie goes inside with their disguise (with Tom using Randall's likeness and Maddie using Rachel's likeness). However, when they are denied to gain entry, Maddie uses her sister's aggression to threaten an agent who allows them get into the headquarters. Once inside the server room, Maddie disguised herself as Rockwell to activate the door. After Tom and Maddie plugged in the USB drive into the server room, the team discovered that the Robotniks are already in the building. This prompts Sonic to rush inside the building.

However, Tom, Maddie, and Tails were caught by Rockwell and her platoon, and they were taken to the vault, where they see Sonic, Robotnik, and his grandfather, Gerald, being trapped by the variable gravity system. On Sonic and Tails' cue, Knuckles launches from Big Ben to break into the vault. But when he grabs the control panel from Rockwell and tries to turn it off, he accidentally breaks it (due to the fact that he has giant hands). This causes everyone in the room to affected by the gravity, with Sonic, Tails, Tom, and Maddie being pinned to the floor, and Sonic, Rockwell, and the G.U.N. agents floating in the air. And when Tails, Tom, and Maddie are about to be crushed by a large piece of concrete and rebar, Sonic creates an EMP that shorts out the defense, and he saves his adopted family from being hurt. This gives Rockwell a chance to grab the second keycard and escape. And then, she is confronted by Tom disguised as Walters, who convinces her to hand it over to him.

Unfortunately, Tom encounters Shadow. Due to him still being disguised as Walters, Shadow mistakes Tom for the very person that he blames for the death of his friend and Gerald's granddaughter, Maria, and attacks him, severely injuring him, and securing the second keycard before realizing his mistake when the disguise fades away. Sonic discovers this, and tries to wake Tom up. This left Team Sonic and Maddie deeply worried. As G.U.N. reinforcements, along with the London City Police and Metropolitan Police, converge on the G.U.N. HQ, Tom is taken by the London Ambulance Service to the hospital with Maddie riding with him.

After Team Sonic saved Earth from the Eclipse Cannon with help from Shadow and Robotnik, Tom has recovered, and was given a cast on his left arm to heal. He returned to Green Hills, where he, Maddie, Team Sonic, and Ozzy resumed their camping trip. Upon leaving his tent, the Wachowskis and Team Sonic share a hug and rejoiced of being together again. Afterward, Sonic challenges Tails and Knuckles to a fair race, and the trio takes off.

Trivia

  • Tom is the second character portrayed by James Marsden who co-stars with the movie's CGI protagonist. The first was Fred O'Hare in Hop, with the character, E.B.
  • Tom is a police officer, just like James Marsden's other character, Hitch Trailblazer.
  • Every movie shows Tom almost getting killed by the villains. In the first film, Dr. Robotnik threatened to kill Tom if he didn't tell him where Sonic was. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Dr. Robotnik tried to use his Giant Eggman Robot to kill Tom, Maddie, and Sonic. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Shadow knocked Tom out when he thought that he was Commander Walters. Out of all the films, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the only one where Dr. Robotnik doesn't try to kill Tom.
  • Even though Sonic didn't refer to Tom as Dad in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the Latin Spanish version of the film actually shows him referring to him as Dad when he found out that Shadow knocked Tom out. If counting the Latin Spanish version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the first film might be the only one where Sonic doesn't refer to Tom as Dad.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the only film where Tom doesn't wear a hat or punch anyone. It's also the only film where he doesn't fight or interact with Dr. Robotnik during the final battle (due to the fact that he was hospitalized).
    • Prior to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, some people thought that Tom was going to die in the film. That theory was partially true because Shadow knocked Tom out when he thought that he was Commander Walters. Despite this, he didn't actually die. He was just injured. By the end of the film, he made a full recovery, but his arm was in a cast, due to the fact that it was still recovering from Shadow's attack.
