Sakuya Sumeragi or better known as Roze/Rozé, is the titular main protagonist of the 2024 Disney+ sequel science-fiction anime series Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture.
She is the fake younger brother of Ash Phoenix who alongside Roze aims to rescue a Hokkaido princess by the name of Sakuya.
As Rozé, she is voiced by Kōhei Amasaki in Japanese and by Luca Padovan in English. As Sakuya, she is voiced by Reina Ueda in Japanese and by Suzie Yeung in English.
Appearance
As Rozé, Sakuya is disguised as an androgynous-looking lean young-man with cyan-colored eyes and wears a short blond wig arriving at her ears with an orange lock on the top left of her head and a small braid against her chest. For attire, she sports an orange-brown jacket with white furs all from her collar down to the bottom. her legs wear black leggings along with long darker boots. Around her neck is a gear with a purple diamond-shaped gem in the center that serves the source of her Geass power, allowing her to alter her voice and iris color, and brainwash others.
Her true appearance as Sakuya is revealed as a beautiful slim young lady with long black hair without her wig and purple-colored eyes by deactivating her Geass powers. As the princess of the Neo Britannian Empire, she dons a loose, stylish, traditional Japanese pink-colored dress with long loose sleeves of purple borders, a turquoise obi tied with a golden cord her waist, and several designs around her torso.
Personality
As Rozé, Sakuya portrays herself as a lively and cheerful young man with great sense of justice and sympathy to help others. She typically remains carefree and possesses great cunning that allowed her to outsmart the Kirkwayne brothers, Gran Kirkwayne and Greed Kirkwayne. However, whenever she reveals herself as Sakuya, she switches to a more serious and cold as a person, while revealing her natural voice as a female, showing her being very adept at switch her personalities between her female and male identities.
Rozé appears to have a very great "brother" bond with Ash, who highly loyal and always assures Rozé's safety at all cost. However, things do not appear what it seems as his loyalty is later revealed to be the result of him being under control of Rozé's Geass, having been enemies in a battle field before Rozé, as Sakuya.
Rozé holds ambition to kill Ash for good to avenge her father after her goal to rescue her body double is reached. Naturally, Sakuya is insecure and fears to have Ash see her true appearance, such as during her time when working as a maid, known as Raspberry, in a cafe shop. She questions Ash's change of demeanor, talking more and even exhibiting more emotion than he typically does.
Unaware that he has met Sakuya prior to being brainwashed, Ash's confession caught Rozé off-guard by the fact he is in love. Knowing whom he is referring to, Rozé worries about her true identity being exposed to Ash. Although, Rozé has a kind and compassionate nature at times, she does not hesitate to brainwash and use others, whether they are innocents or immoral, for her to achieve her purposes, such as gaining information like she did with the nun that raised Ash and especially Ash himself; multiple Neo Britannian collaborators die as the direct result of her brainwashing, which she never felt remorse over. However, when confronted by the reality of Christoph Scissorman's excruciating torture and experiments on her surviving targets, she felt deep remorse and self-loathing; this was especially aggravated by the non-combatants who were tortured to death. Her guilt was made worse by the civilian prisoners caught to be executed just to serve as an interrogation of her.
Despite possessing a cunning and strategic mind, Rozé's carelessness made it easy for the Neo-Britannian Empire to track her down and capture her thanks to the cameras installed which recorded the usage of her Geass powers on her targets, when she wasn't in her Rozé disguise.
After learning that Ash was in fact not responsible for the death of her father, with him only claimed to have "killed" Jugo by failing to save him, which in Ash's eyes was equal to killing him, Sakuya immediately came to regret her action of manipulating Ash all that time by posing herself as his younger brother, leading her to drop her identity as Rozé, and free Ash from her Geass control. Her remorse was made far worse by the knowledge that Ash did have a younger brother who was murdered, but she stole the memory and sibling concern from him during her Geass subjugation of his mind; she also, if unwittingly, forced him to relive the traumatic death of his real brother, as if it were the first time again, which happened as the Geass spell was undone.
It wasn't clear if Ash's romantic attraction to Raspberry persisted upon learning the truth of Rozé/Sakuya, as he ceased expressing any romantic love after the revelation; Sakuya herself never seemed to thoroughly consider a romance, as she was focused entirely on rescuing her best friend Sakura and foiling Norland's evil plans, however, she did feel bashfulness, and upon learning Ash's true self was a really good person, she became genuinely affectionate, although it didn't appear to cross into romantic love. When Ash sacrificed himself to prevent her Knightmare Frame from losing power, she was deeply heartbroken, showing that she grew to at least care for him as much as she did for her closest family friends.
Despite being able to maintain composure, for the most part, upon seeing Norland had the same face as her late grandfather due to being a clone, she struggled to believe such an impossibility. While aiming to kill him when possible, Sakuya was desperate to learn a motive behind Norland unleashing killing machines called LOKI across the Earth; she listed reason after reason to demand a purpose behind the mass slaughter, but he didn't provide one. When Sakuya understood that Norland had no reason, not even hatred for being a clone, her resolve and desire to kill him was amplified, since she concluded that he wasn't even human, regardless of originally being a clone or pawn.
The cumulative guilt of all the deaths that Sakuya directly or indirectly caused and failed to prevent, was enhanced by Ash's self-sacrifice, thus when she was granted the throne of Japan, she used her Geass one last time on herself to make her incapable of speaking ever again, thus unable to use her Geass power again. It was perhaps another display of her lack of foresight, since ruling without being able to talk would complicate her role if verbal commands were needed; nevertheless, it showed that she took possession of her guilt and responsibility in lost lives, especially Ash. By sealing her Geass, she wouldn't be tempted to use such a morally dubious ability ever again, and sabotaging her communication skills would also sabotage any socialising, therefore preventing her from engaging in significant social connections that she believed that she no longer deserved (while she could communicate through text and sign language, most people don't know sign language, and waiting for another to read one's words would make a sluggish interaction).
