Heroine Overview

Leila Malcal, born Leila Breisgau, is the deuteragonist of Code Geass: Akito the Exiled and a minor character in Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture. The child of Britannian nobles who fled to Europe due to their support for the nation's democratic principles, Leila is a young officer in the army of the Europia United who serves as the commander of the wZERO unit.

Leila is intelligent and all-loving, caring deeply for her soldiers. Unlike most Europeans who hold racist views, she cares for and respects Japanese people, referring to them as such instead of the Britannian term, "Eleven."

She is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese and Jeannie Tirado in English.

Appearance

Leila has long blonde hair, purple eyes, and a curvy figure. As a child, she wore a red winter attire with white lining. Her dancing outfit is a red dress with a neckline beneath the shoulders. Her piloting outfit is a mostly black jumpsuit with red. Another outfit she wore consists of a red coat with gold buttons. Aside from those, she is almost always in the standard E.U. military uniform. She is widely considered to be beautiful.

Personality

Leila is a kind, compassionate, intelligent, loyal and purely good-hearted young woman. A deeply sympathetic and empathetic person, she sees the good in people, as seen with the edgy, cynical Akito and even the former terrorists Ryo, Yukiyah, and Ayano. When faced with Shin's nihilistic and misanthropic ideology, she is not hateful, but instead feels sadness for him, calling him broken. She also comforts Akito after he reveals his past. All this shows is that she has no hatred for anyone.

Unlike other Europeans, Leila is not racist and views people of other races as equals. She refuses to use the term 'Elevens' and gets angry when people use it, saying, "They are not Elevens. They are Japanese." As a commander, Leila is intelligent, loyal and caring. She cares deeply for her soldiers and strongly disagreed with the use of Japanese soldiers as suicide bombers. Her loyalty and devotion is shown when she chooses to partake in the battle personally.

History

Akito the Exiled

Leila Malcal is the daughter of two Britannian nobles, Bradow von Breisgau and Claudia Breisgau. Before her birth, her parents had defected to the EU because they disagreed with the dated ruling system in the Holy Britannian Empire, after which they had Leila. Her father became a politician who gained massive support with his charisma and ability to rally the people, earning the nickname Assembly Man. When she was six, Leila attended a rally her father was speaking at with her mother and Gene Smilas. Someone left a Sakuradite bomb in the crowd which detonated, killing Bradow and many in the crowd. Gene evacuated Claudia and Leila, but their car was attacked and left by the side of a road, burning. Her mother told Leila to run before the car exploded. Leila runs into the surrounding forest but falls through a frozen pond. She is rescued by a green-haired woman, who offers her a contract she forgets.

Thereafter, Leila was adopted by the Malcal Family with the deaths of her parents, mostly because Malcal Senior wanted Britannian noble blood joined with his family, and engaged her to his youngest son, Ioan. At some point, she attended school with Anna Clément. She eventually joined the army to get away from her home situation and rose to the rank of Major in the E.U. Army, originally serving as an adjutant to Commander Anou in the wZERO Unit. Leila planned the military operation known as Operation Alpha with the objective of rescuing the surrounded 132nd Regiment in Narva who were surrounded by the Euro-Britannian army on the way to recapture Sankt Petersburg. During the operation, Leila confronted Anou over his last-minute decision to add self-destruction devices to the Alexanders for suicide attacks, goading Anou into attacking her. She disables him and has him removed from his command position, allowing her to deactivate them, but by then only Akito had remains. After the success of the operation, she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by General Smilas and given direct command of the wZERO Unit.

Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture

Leila makes a brief appearance along with the other former members of Wyvern Squad. The group is seen discussing their ongoing tour of Japan while in the port of Kobe before it is attacked by unknown machines from the sea.

Powers and Skills

Leila is capable of piloting mechs and disarming people of their weapons.

She can also restrain her enemies with just her hands. She also can be capable of dancing.

As a military leader, Leila is quite intelligent and is skilled in battle tactics and strategy.

Leila possesses a unique Geass given to her by C.C. It is a 'remnant of Geass' and instead of being a contract, she was given the choice whether or not to use it at all. It is also colored blue. Leila's Geass gives her the power to connect peoples' minds together, as her greatest desire in life is for people who are enemies to understand and sympathize with each other.

Quotes

  • "I want the power to live on my own."
  • (To Akito) "Akito... I'm really happy that you survived. I mean, it let me meet you."
