“ | The strength to stand, Aloy, is the strength to make a stand; to serve a purpose greater than yourself. | „ |

“ | Aloy! Survive! | „ |
~ Rost's last word before sacrificing himself. |
Rost is a major character in the 2017 video game Horizon Zero Dawn and a posthumous character in its 2022 sequel Horizon Forbidden West.
He was the guardian of Aloy and a former member of the Nora tribe, who willingly became a Death-Seeker and later an outcast, after gaining revenge against the killers who killed his own wife Alana and his unnamed daughter, thus breaking the Nora taboo in the process. Rost was responsible for nurturing Aloy throughout her life, as well as training her for the Proving, before inspiring her with life lessons on being a Nora Brave. He ultimately sacrificed himself during the Proving Massacre when Helis killed him, long before he pushed Aloy away to safety.
Rost is voiced by J.B. Blanc and motion-captured by Bryan Larkin.
Appearance
Rost was a large man with strong arms and legs and a barrel-shaped chest. He had a greying beard and braided hair from age. His left shoulder was covered in a boar's skin, while his right shoulder, braces, waist, and boots were covered in blue and scarlet textiles with machine armour plate woven into them. In particular, this plating was taken from a pre-Derangement Stalker. He donned a cloak of black bird feathers outside. He had blue face paint on, same like the other Noras. He had an arrow quiver on his right hip and a bow over his back.
Personality
Rost, although being an outcast, exhibited many of the virtues of the ideal Nora: he was noble, smart, devoted to his family, a good hunter, and a steadfast follower of Nora customs. Rost was a nice man regardless of his station, according to those who knew him before he was exiled.
Rost was fiercely committed to the Nora way of life. As a result, he avoided the Metal World and thought the Old Ones were evil and unfaithful. Even though he was an outcast, he persisted on upholding the tribe's customs, even abandoning Aloy to make sure she wouldn't violate tribal law for his benefit.
Rost tended to guide Aloy rather than lecture her, preferring to impart lessons by experience. Aloy recognised that Rost had taught her everything she knew about survival, despite the fact that she was sometimes annoyed by his reticence to provide information.
Rost gave his life to save Aloy because he cared for her like a daughter.
Trivia
- His name Rost means "rust" in Swedish and German, specifically alluding to one of the game's primary themes of metal.
