Hekarro

Hekarro: You saved the tribe. Let me help you with your mission.
Aloy: No. With Regalla gone you have a chance to build the future you dreamed of. So get to your task.
Hekarro: Then at least allow me to give you this. Regalla's bow. May you always strike true with it.
~ Hekarro and Aloy after killing Regalla.

Hekarro is a major character in the 2022 video game Horizon Forbidden West.

Once a leader of the splinter Tenakth tribe known as the Lowland Clan, Hekarro would later reunify all three Tenakth clans into one, twenty years before the events of the game, after seeing a recording of Anne Faraday from the Memorial Grove in the Forbidden West, as a result of AETHER entering through the machine core located underground.

This event alone ended the five to six centuries of infighting between all three clans, calling for peace rather than disunity. Hekarro's unity alone played a major role in winning a major battle against the Carja during Jiran's Red Raids.

Currently, he serves as the Chief of the unified Tenakth tribe, who is haunted by his past failure of stopping his former Marshal Regalla, who went rogue after growing disillusioned of his peace treaty between him and Avad, as well as the attack on the Embassy in Barren Light.

He was voiced by and modeled after Geno Segers.

Appearance

Hekarro is a middle-aged man with an imposing height, as well as a muscular physique. He has long black hair and hazel eyes, as well as a headdress. He also has tattoos of his own clan all over his body.

Personality

Hekarro is regarded as the best warrior the Tenakth have ever created, imposing in both stature and intelligence. Even in the midst of his adversaries, he demands respect due to his strong moral character and forgiving yet tough leadership. Hekarro is a smart negotiator and strategist who is far wiser than he initially appears to be, having properly foreseen Regalla's tactics and knowing how to form coalitions.

Despite being a terrifying individual, Hekarro is motivated by a desire for long-lasting peace rather than conquest, in contrast to most of his violent forebears who were only interested in bloodbath. He is aware of the conflicts that should and should not be waged. He has the capacity to see past tribal ties in an effort to forge connections and trade relationships with other tribes in the interest of his own. He also possesses a great sense of honour, always keeping his word and honouring the agreements he makes.

Overview

Past

Hekarro was born in Thornmarsh, the capital of the Lowland Clan, and eventually rose to the position of clan commander. He received his military training from the famous Enduring, a Tenakth soldier, and rose to fame as the most terrifying fighter the tribe had ever seen.

Hekarro formerly led battles against other clans, just as many other Tenakth rulers. But after visiting the Memorial Grove, everything changed on a fateful day. After eliminating all of his enemies, Hekarro stood by himself in the Grove and watched as AETHER flew towards the Grove's processing centre in an attempt to escape GAIA's self-destruction. Its appearance momentarily activated a Vision that conveyed a plea for harmony and peace in their battle against the machines. The Vision represented a message from the Ten to Hekarro.

Fashav, a Carja soldier, was arrested and taken for death during the Raids. As a final resort, Fashav sought a chance in the Kulrut; Hekarro was impressed (and, in Fashav's own words, fascinated) and gave it to him. Hekarro would appreciate Fashav for becoming one of his Marshals, but Regalla would regard him with contempt.

When a Sun Priest representing Sun-King Avad arrived and formally proclaimed a halt to the raids, the tense relationship reached its breaking point. Hekarro and the priest decided to establish an embassy at the Eastern and Western borders. Regarding this arrangement, Regalla put Hekarro up for Chief. Hekarro defeated Regalla in a single encounter after a bloody battle that left Hekarro with seven scars.

Regalla. Chief Hekarro's biggest mistake. A rival whom he should have killed.
~ Fashav remarking Hekarro's biggest mistake of sparing Regalla.

Hekarro decided to banish her from the Tenakth, as a whole, since he was unable to murder her—a choice he would later come to regret.

The Embassy

Hekarro made the decision to send Fashav back to the Sundom two years after the Liberation in the hopes that he would act as a mediator between the two tribes and encourage a beneficial interchange of cultural ideas.

Regalla, on the other hand, launched a concerted attack against the Embassy. The attack, which served as the catalyst for Regalla's rebellion, resulted in the deaths of the majority of Hekarro's Marshals, including Fashav.

The Kulrut

Hekarro was dealt a devastating first blow by the attack on the Embassy, which cost him many of his Marshals and much of his capacity to keep the tribe together alongside them.

The Sky Clan's leader, Tekotteh, declined to send champions to participate, intending to hang out in the Bulwark and wait out the uprising. This made holding another Kulrut to rebuild the Marshals troublesome. Hekarro understood that Regalla would attack the Kulrut in order to murder him in front of all three tribes, even if he could have Tekotteh's cooperation.

Aloy, the outsider who defeated Regalla's champion Grudda at Barren Light, would provide the answer. She arrived in the Grove in quest of GAIA's missing subordinate functions, where AETHER was lying in the room under the throne. Even though he didn't know what it was, Hekarro recognised the object she mentioned when she asked for it, and he agreed to let her enter the chamber as long as she first forced Tekotteh's consent and protected the Kulrut.

Regalla attacked the Kulrut as Hekarro had foreseen, but the Kulrut was unprepared for the onslaught from underground. The two engaged in another duel when Regalla arrived at Hekarro. Hekarro took the initiative but lost it as the aircraft over the throne started to crash. Aloy's fast thinking, which guided the jet to fall between Regalla and Hekarro, causing Regalla to withdraw, saved his life. But this only caused Hekarro to regret about not defeating Regalla again, knowing that she would attack the Memorial Grove with a much bigger army than ever.

Aloy kept her part of the agreement, while Hekarro kept his, giving Aloy access to AETHER. The Visions of the Grove came back to life, and the Vision of Unity that had altered Hekarro's life was once again triggered once Aloy retrieved the subordinate function. The Vision served as the final justification of Hekarro's goals in the eyes of the Tenakth who saw it, and they saluted the Chief.

The Wings of the Ten

In the second and final assault on the Grove, Regalla returned with her army of rebels. She and a group of rebels had Kotallo and Ivvira, two Marshals, pinned near to the Arena. Aloy appeared on a Sunwing and challenged her to a fight after defeating her whole army before she could assassinate the Chief. Regalla was quickly defeated in the combat, which was overseen by Hekarro. Aloy is given the option to murder Regalla, but he encourages her to do so. Hekarro offered to send the tribe to assist her in her struggle, regardless of her choice, but she rejected, stating that the tribe needed him more than ever to maintain the peace.

End of a Rebellion

Despite the crimes Regalla had committed in the past, Hekarro and several Tenakth Marshals subsequently paid their respects at her funeral.

Later, after the funeral, Kotallo would come up to Hekarro and seek for his assistance in fending off Nemesis, a renegade, highly sentient AI from the Far Zenith that is now slowly making its way toward Earth.
