Dumbledore's Army (also known as the D.A.) are the main protagonists in Harry Potter series. The group was founded in 1995 by Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and was formed to oppose Dolores Umbridge to learn Defence Against the Dark Arts when the British Ministry of Magic refused to teach it.
The group was named after their headmaster, Albus Dumbledore.
History
In 1995, when students were deprived of being properly taught in Defense Against the Dark Arts, Dumbledore's Army was founded by Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley to properly teach their fellow students how to defend themselves against the Dark Arts in the wake of Lord Voldemort's return. Those who became members signed a parchment that, unknown to them, was a jinx placed on it by Hermione so that if anyone betrayed the D.A., they would automatically have the words "SNEAK" written on their forehead in the form of several zits. After Cho Chang suggested they should be called Defense Association, Ginny Weasley suggested they call it "Dumbledore's Army" in honor of Albus Dumbledore because the Ministry already feared Dumbledore was trying to usurp the position of Minister of Magic from Cornelius Fudge. Their activity even went all the way in early 1996 in the Room of Requirements after Dobby found it. However, the group was betrayed by Marietta Edgecombe, Cho's best friend who was forced to comply because of her mother's position at the Ministry. This betrayal caused Hermione's jinx to take affect on Marietta, who had "sneak" written across her forehead.
After the members were caught, Harry was nearly expelled until Dumbledore took responsibility for the organization. Fudge ordered Dumbledore's arrest, however, the headmaster had escaped. The group was disbanded after that.
Second Wizarding War
During the Second Wizarding War, the team was re-founded in 1997 in opposition of Voldemort's rule, this time led by Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood and Ginny Weasley. Those who had graduated Hogwarts had come back to fight in the Battle against Voldemort.
Afterwards, several members were killed, such as Fred Weasley and Colin Creevey. However, the survivors celebrated their victory in the Great Hall and were considered war heroes.

Trivia
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, several events are altered.
- Cho seemingly betrays the D.A. to Dolores Umbridge rather than her friend, Marietta Edgecombe. In the film, this is what causes Harry to break up with her over fighting over how Marietta betrayed them. However, it is revealed by Severus Snape that Cho was forced to reveal the truth under the influence of the veritaserum. Though Harry and Cho don't get back together, they still remain friends.
- Hermione's jinx is omitted from the film.
- The Room of Requirements in the film is found by Neville but in the books, it is Dobby.
