Biography
Early Life
Dean Thomas was born between September 1st, 1979 to August 31st, 1980 in London, England to unnamed father and mother. His father was a wizard while his mother was a muggle, and his father left the family and didn't tell them about magic to protect them during the First Wizarding War. Dean's father would later be murdered by a group of Death Eaters after refusing to join them, and Dean would grow believing that he was muggle-born. His mother would go marry a muggle and have unnamed children with them, who showed no magical abilities.
Harry Potter Series
The Philosopher's Stone
When Dean received a letter to join Hogwarts of School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1991, his mother suspected that his father was a wizard, and allowed to be accepted in. Arriving to Hogwarts, Dean was sorted into House Gryffindor and befriended his fellow Gryffindor classmates, Seamus Finnigan, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Hermione Granger. He shared a dormitory with Seamus, Harry, Ron and Neville, and placed a West Ham United Football Club poster above his bed. Ron was bemused by this, but Dean, like Harry, didn't grow up watching Quidditch, but the two would become skilled players.
The Chamber of Secrets
During his second year, Dean joined the Dueling Club, where students were trained on how to protect themselves by Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart. After Filch's cat was petrified, rumors spread that the Chamber of Secrets had been reopened, and that the heir of Slytherin was in the school. When Professor Binns told his class about the history of the chamber, Dean was about to make a correct speculation, but was stopped by the professor. Due to his muggle-born status, Dean was believed to be at risk of being attacked by the creature. Thankfully, the creature was stopped by Harry, who managed to save Ginny from Tom Riddle, who was trying to return to the world through his diary.
Personality
Dean was open-minded. When Dolores Umbridge referred to Remus Lupin as a "dangerous half-breed", he jumped to his former teacher's defense. On two occasions, he told her and another teacher, Professor Snape, that Lupin was the best Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher that his class group ever had.
Dean was generally an easy-going and good-natured person, able to get along well with many people. He never displayed any anger towards Harry Potter during their sixth year, especially when his ex-girlfriend Ginny Weasley started dating Harry shortly after breaking up with her, because he was aware of Ginny's childhood crush on the Boy Who Lived since she came to Hogwarts a year after the two boys started. He also easily established a friendship with Neville Longbottom and Luna Lovegood, whom many would consider bizarre.
He was brave and loyal. He was eager to participate in the defense of his school against Death Eaters, despite not even having a wand, and never lost his faith in Harry Potter, believing him when he claimed that Lord Voldemort had returned. He also had faith that Harry would eventually defeat the Dark Lord.
Dean was apparently willing to violate school rules, if doing so would help a friend. In his third year, when Harry was not allowed to go to Hogsmeade because his uncle had not signed his permission slip, Dean offered to forge the signature (unfortunately Harry could not accept, as he had already mentioned to Professor McGonagall that his form was not signed).
Dean was a skilled artist and also enjoyed reading the comic book Loony Nonby v.s. Cornish Pixie, showing an interest in art.

Trivia
- Rowling included information on Dean's background in an early draft of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but ultimately cut it out, as she felt it was an "unnecessary digression." She stated that she had to a certain extent traded Dean's "voyage of discovery" for Neville Longbottom's because the latter character's discoveries about his past were more relevant to the main story.
- His name was "Gary" in early drafts of the first book.
