— Big Man introducing himself in Return of the Mammalians
|
Big Man (マンタロー Mantarō?), alias Ian BGM is a character in Splatoon 3. He is a member of the band Deep Cut along with Shiver and Frye, with whom he co-hosts Anarchy Splatcast and Splatfests. He is also a boss in Return of the Mammalians.
Appearance
Big Man is a mostly dark grey manta ray with light gray on his wings, face, stomach and tail. He also has a splat pattern on his wings. He appears to be standing on his pelvic fins like a pair of legs and feet, giving him an anthropomorphic look. His eyes are large with crescent moon pupils, and his mouth resembles that of a cat's, like Judd's, except he appears to be smiling.
When Big Man was young, he was much smaller. He wore red headphones in replacement for his hat, and presumably had freckles on his cheeks.
During the Grand Festival, Big Man wears white suspenders with large spikes and a black leather underside, white bandages around his tail, and a white flared headpiece reminiscent of a mohawk or a sailfish fin. He additionally has three tips of makeup under his left eye, and a tribal-style pattern on his fins.
Personality
Big Man is the music writer and producer for deep cut, and when he introduces himself, he does so in a jovial manner, using slang, fish puns, and talking about making money. However, despite this, he is actually rather dopey and selfless, and doesn’t truly care that much about money or being famous.
He is the most carefree and kindest member of Deep Cut, holding up the television for Shiver and Frye during the news, and even though he wants treasure to give to the less fortunate and believes he must fight for it, he doesn't want to actually fight most of the time and does so begrudgingly.
Even when Agent 3 rematches him, he is initially filled with jubilation upon seeing them, but his happiness is immediately crushed once he finds out it's to fight again, yet he still does it because he fears Shiver and Frye will yell at him if he retreats.
Additionally, when playing Tableturf Battle against him, he shows this same reluctance when he's chosen to play against, yet when he loses, he promises to the player that he'll eventually beat them.
However, when he wins in Tableturf Battle, he not only brags about it but he also threatens if the player isn't careful during their next game with him, he'll "do it again", suggesting he doesn't take losing very well.
This same trait extends to the point of sounding forceful and even threatening, as when he advertises for Splatfests, he either threatens the losing team (by saying if Rock and Paper lose, he'll shower them with confetti during his victory parade) or yells at the audience to join his side (when begging the player to choose Team Fun).
Regardless, he never truly means any harm whatsoever, and is very enthusiastic about his friends' success, agrees with them a lot and even seems to let them overshadow him. He does not have many lines and does not dance as well as his friends during the Splatfest song, but is simply happy to be there, showing how optimistic and kind he is.
As shown in the Splatoon 3's Artbook, Big Man is the succeeded head of the head of his distinguished family at a young age, he can be very talkative when it comes to his favorite things, but it seems that he is no match for Sheldon, and after going to Ammo Knight, Big Man always comes back all dried out.

Trivia
- 'Big Man' is a nickname used by road men in the UK typically to show someone is a leader or it can be used to refer to someone with slightly more social power but can also mean someone who deals with substances.
- Big Man can also be a pun on how he is big, and a manta ray, as well as his gender, though through this term it could reference him being the head of the Manta Clan, and also as a brief callback to his somewhat “gangster” dialogue when first introduced).
- He doesn't speak the language the Octolings and Inklings do but rather with multiple 'Ay's, with the translation in brackets. Shiver and Frye however seem to understand him fluently.
- His boss fight in the game is a reference to the boss Phantamanta in Super Mario Sunshine.
- His title is "The Hype Manta Storm", also referencing Phantamanta.
- His parts in Deep Cut’s songs, and dance moves are inspired by Latin music and the samba dance from Brazil.
