Mendel is a space colony introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview
An Island 3 type colony located at Lagrange 4, Mendel is a know hub of scientific development, primarily in the field of genetic research.
History
The Mendel colony was constructed in C.E. 30. The colony housed the G.A.R.M. R&D advanced genetic research facility, the research laboratory of Dr. Ulen Hibiki, one of the leading researchers in genetics. It was here that the Ultimate Coordinator Project was conducted, as was the creation of clones of industrialist Al Da Flaga, father of Mu La Flaga.[1][2]
In C.E. 68, Mendel was evacuated of its inhabitants due to a viral outbreak, and the colony was sterilized. However, sometime after the outbreak, a small team of ZAFT researchers were stationed at Mendel, trying to recover samples of George Glenn's DNA that were stored at the research facilities there.[3][4] In C.E. 71, Mendel became the temporary base of operations for the Three Ships Alliance in the waning days of the First Alliance-PLANT War.[5] The Three Ships Alliance abandoned the colony after ZAFT and the Earth Alliance attacked them during the Battle of Mendel.[6]
In late C.E. 73, Martin DaCosta returned to the colony during an investigation on the current PLANT Chairman Gilbert Durandal. At one of the abandoned laboratories, Martin found a journal that belonged to Durandal, with information regarding his "Destiny Plan".[7]

Notes & Trivia
- The Mendel colony is quite appropriately named after Gregor Mendel, a 19th-century Austrian monk who is often referred to as the "father of genetics". His experiments studying the inheritance of traits in pea plants laid the foundation for our modern understanding of genetics.
