Yuqi (우기), also known as Sòng Yǔ Qí (宋雨琦), is a Chinese singer, songwriter, and producer signed under CUBE Entertainment. She is the main dancer, vocalist, rapper and face of the South Korean girl group (G)I-DLE.
She made her solo debut with the mini album Yuq1 on April 23, 2024.
Early life
Song Yuqi was born on September 23, 1999, in Beijing, China. She attended Beijing 101 Middle School.[1] K-Pop became an important part of Yuqi’s life during her secondary school years. She began watching more and more K-Pop dance videos online and was very interested in K-Pop songs and choreographies.
She participated in the 2015 CUBE Audition held in Beijing and was later contacted by CUBE Entertainment for a second evaluation. The process of going alone to South Korea was not easy for her as her parents were strongly against the idea of her becoming an idol. She would try to persuade them daily and eventually they approved of her decision, realising that Yuqi should be able to do what she wanted to.
Career
2018: Debut with (G)I-DLE
On April 8, 2018, Yuqi was revealed as the first member of (G)I-DLE.[2] The group officially debuted on May 2 with their first mini album I am.
2019: Keep Running
On April 21, 2019, it was announced Yuqi would be joining the main cast of the Chinese variety show Keep Running.[3] On April 23, 2020, Yuqi was confirmed to be returning as a cast member for the show's eighth season.[4] In September, Yuqi sang the ending theme for the Chinese reality show Please Pay Attention Visitors.[5]
2020: King of Mask Singer and solo activities
Yuqi participated in the show King of Mask Singer on November 1. She first sang Lee Hi's "Holo" in a duet with her competitor, and then she sang 2NE1's "Missing You" by herself after she was eliminated, before revealing her identity. The panelists were impressed with both her fluent Korean pronunciation as well as her unique vocal tone.[6]
On September 17, KakaoTV launched an original entertainment program hosted by Yuqi, Learn Way.[7]
In October, Yuqi was cast in tvN's I'm a Survivor, a reality show where entertainers undergo survival training for natural disasters.[8]
On November 9, it was announced that Yuqi would participate in G-Star 2020 with Krafton, an e-sports reality show where celebrities and streamers entered a special school for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Series 3.[9]
On November 22, Yuqi appeared on Play Seoul, a program produced by the Seoul Tourism Foundation and KBS with the aim of promoting safe post-COVID-19 tourism in Seoul.[10]
On November 30, Yuqi also appeared in Seoul Connects U, a variety travel show jointly planned and produced by MBC and Seoul Tourism Foundation.[11]
2021: "A Page", Stage Boom and China's activities
On May 5, it was announced that Yuqi would release her first solo digital single, "A Page", on May 13.[12]
She's participating in the Chinese survival show Stage Boom, which started airing on iQIYI on August 6. Ten female singers compete in order to get a chance to stay on the show and perform again, with the show containing a total of 33 performances. Yuqi expressed that she's often seen as an entertainer, so the show is an occasion to showcase her vocal talents, especially in her home country where she might be less known than overseas.[13][14]
On October 27, Yuqi participated in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games theme song "Salute to the Heroes".[15] Throughout 2021, Yuqi also participated in multiple Chinese variety shows including Keep Running, Let's Fall In Love 3, 2060, and Shine! Super Brothers.
2023: "Sweet Dream", I Wasn't the Cinderella, series, Street Woman Fighter 2 and international collaborations
In February 2023, Yuqi and groupmate Miyeon released the song "Sweet Dream" as part of the soundtrack for the Netflix romantic comedy series Love to Hate You.[16]
Later in February, she collaborated with EDM producer team HypeerTime on the song "Not Cinderella" for the KakaoPage webtoon I Wasn't the Cinderella.[17]
In March, she was confirmed to return as a main cast member in season 11 of Keep Running.[18]
In June, Yuqi was a featured artist on Yena's "Hate Rodrigo" the lead single from Choi's second single album Hate XX.[19]
The following month, she made her acting debut in the Netflix original series Celebrity as Zhang Wei, a Chinese influencer.
On September 5, Yuqi and Miyeon released the single "How to Twerk" as part of the soundtrack of the Mnet dance competition show Street Woman Fighter 2.[20]
Six days later, she was cast alongside Chuu and Billlie's Tsuki in the Studio X+U entertainment show Star of Star Girls.
2024-2024: "Fire!", "Bad Liar", "Could It Be", solo debut with Yuq1 and Renewal contract
On December 14, Yuqi collaborated with Alan Walker and Jvke on the single "Fire!" off of Walker's fourth studio album Walkerworld.[21]
On February 27, Yuqi released "Bad Liar", a special track from the tvN series Marry My Husband.[22]
On March 22, Cube Entertainment announced that Yuqi would make her official solo debut by the end of April.[23] On April 1, it was announced that she will be releasing the digital single "Could It Be" on April 5 as a pre-release for her solo debut mini album, Yuq1, which will be released on April 23.[24] The mini-album then sold a total of 550,170 copies during the first week of its release, breaking the record of the highest first-week sales made by a K-pop female solo artist's debut EP.[25]
On September 20, Yuqi released the promotional single "One" as part of the soundtrack for the Chinese release of Transformers One.[26]
On November 30 during the MMA Awards, Soyeon said that all of the contestants have renewed their contracts. On December 2, Cube Entertainment officially announces the renewal of all (G)I-DLE members' contracts.[27]
2025: "Radio (Dum-Dum)", "FENDI"
On March 14, 2025, (G)I-DLE teased an upcoming release scheduled for March 17.[28] The next day, they announced Yuqi's digital single, "Radio (Dum-Dum)".[29]
On April 10, Yuqi released a digital single, "FENDI".[30]
