Spain was a country in Europe prior to the Great War.
Background
Spain was a European country located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean approximately 3,700 miles from Boston's shoreline.[1][2] Its capital was Madrid.[3] Historically, the country was a major colonial power which built itself into a global empire through conquest out of a desire to gain wealth and territory.[4] In fact, the Spanish monarchy were the main funders of Christopher Columbus, the explorer who opened up the American continent to European colonization. The country's colonial presence in the Americas was eventually ended by the Spanish-American War, in which Spain lost to the United States of America.[5]
In the pre-War era, Dean Domino once visited Madrid and got himself into a difficult situation -- one which he finds comparable to if not worse than being trapped in the Sierra Madre Villa.[3] Ineke de Haan, a European ship worker and merchant, also visited Spain and found it beautiful for its golden beaches; she still reminisces about them after the war.[2]
Notes
- Spain's colonial empire is mentioned by the Narrator in the Fallout intro.[4] The intro also appears on the back cover of the Fallout Pen and Paper d20 guide.
- The Museum of History in Washington, D.C. contained kiosks describing Spain's involvement in American history, particularly the Spanish-American War.[5]
- The Pillars of Hercules, mentioned as an incorrect answer to a question in the Pioneer Scouts' archaeologist badge exam, are mountains in Spain.[6]
Appearances
Spain is mentioned in Fallout, Fallout 3, the Fallout 4 add-on Automatron, and in Fallout 76, first in the Wild Appalachia update and later by name in the Milepost Zero update.
Behind the scenes
- One of the instrumental tracks on Radio New Vegas in Fallout: New Vegas is named "Von Spanien Nach Südamerika," which translates from German to "From Spain to South America."
