Greece

Greece was a country which existed in Europe before the Great War.

Background

  • ARCHIMEDES and ARCHIMEDES II are named after the ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer, and inventor Archimedes of Syracuse.
  • Euclid's C-Finder is named after the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid, the "father of geometry." The weapon's name is a reference to Euclidean geometry.
  • Robert MacCready references ancient Greek history, in particular the Trojan Horse.[4]
  • During The Molecular Level, Proctor Ingram may sarcastically comment that the list of parts needed for the molecular relay is so technical that it "might as well be in Greek."[5]
  • An Appalachian audio tour station references Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea.[6]
  • One of the questions in the Pioneer Scout archer exam states that the ballista was invented thousands of years ago in Syracuse, a Greek town.[7] In the archeologist exam, the Greek ruins of Wilusa and Sicily are mentioned (Sicily is Italian but was back then settled by Greek colonists).[8] The exam also references the collapse of Bronze Age civilizations, also known as the Greek Dark Ages, was indicated by a lack of Greek writing.[8]
  • Sofia Daguerre mentions the Greek mythological characters Arachne and Athena.[9]

Nearly all of the allusions to Greece have been in reference to Ancient Greek mythology. Mythological figures referenced include:

Some other mentioned mythological devices include the Wings of Icarus, the Golden Fleece, the Trojan Horse, and the Sandals of Hermes.[25]

Appearances

The impressive stalactite and stalagmite to your left, known as the Trident, will one day come together to form a massive natural column. The natural cave water here is filtered through the cavern rock over centuries, and is pure enough to bathe a newborn child in! Cross the bridge to continue the tour. For legal reasons, we encourage guests to stay on the trail and away from the water."

She challenged the Goddess Athena somehow and... well, she was turned into a spider. You know, like Arachnids. Right? Some versions of the story say she won, others say Athena won. I don't remember the details... and does it matter? I don't know, either. I know it's a stretch, but it's the only connection I can think of."

Well, I shall call you Hecate then. Do you mind?' 'Hecate...' 'Yes. Forgive me, I know you don't understand, but I find it amusing. You see, I am Diana and she was the goddess of the full, or bright moon. Hecate was her opposite, the goddess of the new, or dark moon. She was also known as the Dark Mother. So, I thought I would christen you Hecate.' "
