Alex is the name of the Player's deceased partner. Depending on how you portray the story, Alex can be Amanda's biological parent or adoptive parent. It can be assumed that the Jacket Amanda wears is the same one worn by Alex in the photo that is shown of them, which would mean that Alex was once a corporal in the military.
Alex's gender is decided by the player in a dialogue option when talking to Amanda in the early stages of the game.
