Goose

That's not a cat. That's a Flerken.
―Talos[src]

Goose is a character from Marvel Comics who appears in Captain Marvel and The Marvels.

Background

Goose is a Flerken from the planet of the same name, despite her outward appearance. As such, she possesses abilities beyond that of Earth cats, the most notable one being the ability to swallow anything and keep it stored inside her belly. After making her way to Earth, she became Carol Danvers' pet, and once she returned to Earth as Captain Marvel, she helped her and Nick Fury in their battle against the Kree. After Carol departed for space to live with the Skrulls, Goose became Fury's pet.

Goose is notable because she is responsible for clawing off Fury's left eye with a nasty incurable scar. Fury's statement in Captain America: The Winter Soldier ("the last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye") most likely indicates his anger and bitterness about being deceived by the Kree, and his intent to never let himself be deceived by evildoers again.

Goose is also notable for retrieving the Tesseract so that it would be once again in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s custody.[1]

Appearances

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Captain Marvel

Goose appears in this film owned by Mar-Vell and is taken in by Nick Fury while on a mission. When Mar-Vell is killed, Fury takes ownership of Goose until the "cat" scratches his eye out, making him become blind in one eye and become fearful of the creture. Talos then informs Fury, Maria Rambeau and Carol Danvers that Goose is only disguised as a cat and is actually a creature known as a flerken. Sometime later, Fury adopts the flerken and keeps it will him throughout his adventures in space and earth.

The Marvels

Goose reappears in this film now owned by Captain Marvel and joins her on her journey's throughout space. When Carol gets entangled with Kamala Khan, Goose appears in front of the teenager, whom is horrorfied to see Goose eat someone who is associated with Dar-Benn and she explains what Goose has done when she is teleported back home to her parents, where she panics. Goose then spits out the people it ate, much to the horror of Kamala's family.

Goose is then mentioned in a flashback set in 2020, when Maria Rambeau asked Carol to take Goose as Maria had learnt her cancer had returned and didn't have much time left to live. However, Carol refused to take care of the "cat" as she believed Maria was able to beat the cancer a second time. Maria mentioned to Carol that Goose wasn't a cat and it was just until "Monica got back", until Carol reminded Maria that Monica wouldn't return as she had blipped two years earlier.

While Carol is dealing with Dar-Benn with Kamala and Monica Rambeau, Goose is kept on Fury's ship with Kamala's family, where it birth's hundreds of Flerken's. Following Dar-Benn defeat and demise, Goose is reunited with Captain Marvel and back in her care.

Trivia

  • In the comics, Goose went by the name of Chewie, after the Star Wars character Chewbacca.
  • In the movies, Goose is named after Maverick's friend Goose, from Top Gun, despite being a female.
  • The cat who played Goose in Captain Marvel is named Reggie.
  • Goose gave birth to hundreds of "kittens" in The Marvels.
  • According to Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the decision to include Goose in Captain Marvel was fun because they could make Goose an important ally of Captain Marvel and moving the plot forward instead of just being a silly gag, indicating that Goose was not initially intended to consume the Tesseract but when the idea was proposed, it made it more fun.[2]
  • Despite the close bond between Goose and Carol Danvers, Brie Larson is allergic to cats and would avoid the cats portraying Goose between takes. Samuel L. Jackson also had a difficult time shooting scenes featuring Goose, as he generally does not interact well with animals.[3] Conversely, Ben Mendelsohn is very fond of cats and enjoyed shooting his scenes with them, despite Talos being terrified of Goose.[4]
  • Kevin Feige has expressed interest in an MCU production focusing on Goose, possibly for Disney+, to explore her story in the last twenty years following Captain Marvel.[5]
