Face Armchair

The Face Armchair is a form of furniture located in the Haunted Mansion attraction at the Disney Parks.

Background

The chair is an elegant armchair decorated with white stitching to make it look like it has a face on it. At least four physical variants of the chair exist in the actual ride.

Development

The idea of creating an anthropomorphic chair came from the late Disney imagineer, Rolly Crump for the unbuilt Museum of the Weird attraction. The chair would interact with guests while speaking to them. However, this attraction was ultimately scrapped.

Appearances

The Haunted Mansion

In the Disneyland version of the attraction, the armchair is encountered in the Endless Hallway scene where it is seen across a living suit of armor. Another one is encountered in the ballroom scene where the ghost of an elderly woman sits on it.

The Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland versions of the attraction share the same chair as in the Disneyland version where it is encountered in the Endless Hallway scene. Additionally, another variant of the chair is encountered in the Library area, albeit with a different design.

Other appearances

Kinect: Disneyland Adventures

The armchair is one of the obstacles encountered in the Haunted Mansion attraction in the Stretching Room scene witch the player must avoid crashing into to prevent their coin progress from being reduced.

Disney Kingdoms

The armchair appears in the fifth issue of the Disney Kingdoms comic series where it is referred to as the Walking Chair. It is used by the protagonists as a method of transportation through the Museum of the Weird.

Haunted Mansion (2023)

The face armchair appears in the 2023 film adaptation, which is a reboot of the 2003 film adaptation. While often seen in the background, the armchair became in possession by one of the spirits, which pushes Bruce out of the mansion, resulting him to be injured upon being hit by a car in the highway - although he manages to recover.

Trivia

  • The chair became a subject outside of the Haunted Mansion universe, where it can be unofficially dubbed as the "Donald Duck Chair", due to the face decorated on the chair having a resemblance to Donald, often interpreting it as if it were a "Hidden Donald" in a manner similar to making it a "Hidden Mickey" albeit with Mickey Mouse instead. The resemblance can be noted by judging the shape of the chair's head resembling Donald's sailor hat and its nose resembling his duck bill, although the lines stitched around the eyes often interpret it as if it were Donald's head.
  • The chair also appeared in an unused concept of the changing portrait of a burning miser by Marc Davis, which was scrapped in the final version of the attraction.
