Jiangshi

The Jiangshi (キョンシー, Kyonshī^?) are reanimated corpses controlled by the partner of the Minotaur.

In Dandadan, they serve as minor antagonists during the Kozuka Knives Arc.

Physical Characteristics

The group are all identical in physical appearance, possessing a mummified face with dark, sunken eyes, stitched mouths, an expressionless face, and hair tied into a long braid. In addition to looking identical, they all wear matching clothes, which are traditional Chinese clothes that resembles the attire of Qing Dynasty officials; a long robe with wide sleeves and a square panel on the chest, a hat with a flat top, loose-fitting pants, and dark shoes. Overall, their appearance fit the stereotypical depiction of the Chinese hopping vampire known as the jiangshi.

Psychological Characteristics

The jiangshi have a tendency to shout when engaging in kung fu against their opponents, as it is common for practitioners of this fighting style.

Jiangshi are currently loyal to Adachi.

Kozuka Knives Arc

The jiangshi arrive at Juicy Gyoza Manufactory Dandadan just as Seiko prepares to leave to locate the Uchide-no-Kozuchi. After kicking away Kashimoto and Payase, the jiangshi proceed to attack Seiko together.^[1] Despite outnumbering her, they are easily overpowered by her martial arts and utilization of her surroundings, leading to the Minotaur stepping in to defeat Seiko himself. The jiangshi and the minotaur are then knocked back by Payase and Kashimoto using their curse power.^[2] They then get annihilated by Payase and Kashimoto's using their respective spirit guardian and cursed form so Adachi is forced to escape while the Minotaur gets beaten and interrogated by the trio.

Later at school, Adachi informs the Orchestrator about the failed ambush while the Jiangshi ominously stand behind her, not visible to others thanks to the talismans placed on them.

In Murakami's apartment, Adachi is being paid to wear an erotic outfit for the man's fantasies, although she's keeping the Jiangshi's talisman behind her back unbeknownst to him. When he drags her to the couch she secretly unleashes the creatures and asks them to wait until he has dropped his guard to strike since they don't know what power he possesses. Her plan gets disrupted when a fly makes noise and he turns around, noticing both the Jiangshi and a giant swarm unknowingly controlled by Kouki who's currently fighting the Severed Head Dribblers along with Rin, Mai and Aira. The bugs immediately engulf him and forcefully enter his body from every orifice. Adachi is shocked by the current events but doesn't waste time and pulls out a kozuka knife, demanding him to yield. Despite him initially hesitating, he grabs the knife and admits defeat, freeing him from his powers. He falls to the ground so Adachi and the Jiangshi rush to disperse the swarm from him when he's unexpectedly brought into the air and crashes through the glass, transporting him to the gym of Kami High where the girls were fighting.

Urban Legend

The Jiangshi is a legendary creature from Chinese folklore. The origins of the Jiangshi can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), where it was believed to be a reanimated corpse created through dark magic or sorcery.

Trivia

• Jiangshi or "hopping zombies" are creatures from Chinese folklore, depicted as reanimated corpses suffering from rigor mortis (stiffening of the limbs after death), which is why hopping is their only form of locomotion. They are usually depicted dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, a round-topped hat and a talisman hanging from their forehead.
