Rei Tachibana (立花 玲 Tachibana Rei) is a supporting character who debuted only in one episode of Cardcaptor Sakura 's first season.

Appearance

Rei has short light brown hair and brown eyes. Her outfit changes five times in the episode. She first appears wearing a pink shirt with a red skirt and is later seen donning a yellow jacket. She is also seen wearing the school sportswear as well as the school uniform.

Her winter school uniform is a black long-sleeved shirt with red and white sleeve cuffs, a white neckerchief with a red stripe, and a white pleated miniskirt with a frilly white knee-length petticoat. On particularly cold days, she wears a thick black coat with her school's insignia on the back. Her summer uniform is a white half-sleeved shirt with a red neckerchief and a black pleated miniskirt. All year round, a white sailor hat with a black trim is worn along with white socks and black mary jane shoes.

Plot

Rei is a sixth grader attending Tomoeda Elementary School. Rei first meets The Dash card when she hears a noise outside of her house. She notices that The Dash is injured and bandages The Dash's wound. Rei decides to keep The Dash as a pet and names its "Peewee" (Hoppy in the English dub).

The next morning, Sakura pretends to be playing baseball as a means to get closer to The Dash card. She drops the baseball near Rei's house, and Sakura meets Rei for the first time. Rei is also a member of the track team, but is not the best runner on the team, losing to another member in the 100-meter dash. However, when she does the 100-meter dash the second time, The Dash assists her, and Rei is the obvious winner of the race. Sakura and Kero acknowledge that this is because Dash is affecting Rei.

Later, Rei invites Sakura and Tomoyo over to her house, where she reveals that she has qualified as a representative for the next track meet. Sakura plans to catch Dash only after Rei's race ends. However, Kero insists that Sakura catch Dash before it fully heals and can get away. Syaoran then arrives to catch Dash before the Race. Sakura tries to stop Syaoran from sealing Dash to spare Rei's feelings, but Kero convinces her that if Rei wins the race with the help of Dash, it wouldn't be a true win. Sakura seals the card, but the card's master is Syaoran.

When Syaoran asks Sakura why she hadn't tried capturing Dash sooner, Rei frantically searching for her beloved Peewee answers his question. At the track meet, Rei manages to advance to the final round without help from Dash. During the final round, Syaoran summons Dash to appear at the finish line to motivate Rei, and Rei wins the race.

Etymology

  • Her name Rei means "the tinkling of Jade" (玲).
  • Rei's last name means "standing" (立) (tachi) and "flower, blossom" (花) (hana/bana).
    • It should be noted that although the pronunciation is similar, Rei's surname is written with different characters than Yuuki Tachibana's, and thus they have no known relation to each other.
