Pug conDoin

Pug conDoin (Betrayal at Krondor)

Master Magician Pug conDoin, Duke of Stardock and known as Milamber to the Tsurani, is a major figure in Midkemian history. He is one of the six player characters in Betrayal at Krondor and provides chapter-opening narration in Return to Krondor.

Betrayal at Krondor

Orphaned at a young age, Pug was raised in the kitchens of Crydee in the Western Empire. Apprenticed to Kulgan the magician, he showed little magical promise initially. Pug was captured and enslaved by the Tsurani during the Riftwar. Seeing vast potential in the boy, the Great Ones of the Tsurani Empire began to train him in the magic of the Greater Path. When Pug returned to Midkemia, he helped bring an end to the Riftwar with the help of Macros the Black. He was afterward adopted into the royal family and awarded land on which to begin his Academy of Magic at Stardock.

Pug's irresistible friendliness belies the fact that he is the unchallenged master of magic in Midkemia. At the time covered by the game, he and his wife Katala have two children: an adopted daughter, Gamina, and a son, William conDoin.

Pug first appears at the end of Chapter 1 and joins the party in Chapters 8 and 9.

Starting Spells

Pug joins the party with a Crystal Staff, a Staff of Macros, and no starting spells. However, he is immediately able to learn any spell that Owyn Beleforte knows up to that point, as well as all remaining spells in the game, by using the Cup of Rlnn Skrr.

Starting Stats

Pug has the highest starting Health, Stamina, and Haggling Skill of any party member, and his starting Scouting Skill is tied for highest with Gorath's. He also starts with 100% Accy: Casting.[1] These high stats serve to compensate for his late start as a party member, as both Gorath and Owyn have plenty of time to surpass him in Health, Stamina, Haggling, and Scouting by the time he joins them.

Return to Krondor

A journal entry recounted in Pug's voice opens each chapter and provides context on the current situation.

Chapter 0

Pug's narration explains the situation after the Riftwar and his choice of Jazhara, one of his finest students at Sorcerer's Isle, to replace Prince Arutha's retiring court mage, Kulgan. Believing the Academy of Magic had no more to teach her, he cites her Keshian court experience as a political asset and hopes that the responsibility of the post will temper her fiery nature.

Trivia

  • In Betrayal at Krondor, Pug's high starting Haggling Skill is ironic, as there is no opportunity to Haggle for the remainder of the game.
  • While given no physical description in the game's text, Pug is depicted in Betrayal at Krondor as a clean-shaven man in white robes with shoulder-length blond hair. In the Riftwar Saga, he is described as having brown hair and a beard.
