Ginkgo

Ginkgo[nb 1] was a martial artist from Omashu who traveled with a group of adventurers after the Hundred Year War, seeking to make the world a better place.[2]

History

Ginkgo was born into a small family in Omashu during the late Hundred Year War.[1] He was the family's youngest child, had a happy childhood, and grew up with the stories of past Avatars as retold by his mother. As he got older, Ginkgo always believed that the Avatar would return, and this hope was fulfilled when Aang reappeared and ended the Great War. Inspired, he decided to use his martial arts training to travel with his pet turtle duck Soup and aid people around the Earth Kingdom.[2]

Before long, Ginkgo realized that many people had suffered much more than he had during the war, but this did not diminish his enthusiasm. Instead, he wanted to work even harder to help those in need.[2] Eventually, he met and befriended an outlaw named Ziyi who soon started to see it as her duty to protect Ginkgo during his often foolish quests.[1][3]

While in the Earth Kingdom town of Machi, Ginkgo and Ziyi helped quell a riot when the Harmony Restoration Movement fell apart in 101 AG. In the process, they met Kallika, Toklo, and Chihiro. As a result of their role in ending the local crisis, the five companions were given a special dispensation by the regional governor to help towns adjust to the fallout of the decolonization process.[1]

The group later came to Linsho during the Squid Ink Festival, seeking an arsonist who had been involved in several violent incidents in the region. While in town, they watched a conflict break out between the town's Fire Nation Loyalists and Earth Kingdom Restorationists, with each blaming the other for a fire at a Blue Skies Fisheries warehouse. Mayor Leaf tasked the companions with finding the arsonist as quick as possible, while also keeping people safe, as a storm was brewing.[1][4]

Personality

Ginkgo was a hopeful optimist, bordering on naivete. Out of his great respect for Avatar Aang, he became determined to help others.[1][2] Even when faced with great challenges and suffering, this did not stop his drive to improve others' lives.[2]

Abilities

Ginkgo was a skilled martial artist using various weapons,[1][2] including his silk sash for defense. He also had a strong bond with his pet turtle duck Soup, and could coordinate with the animal to assist him in various situations.[2]
