Harry Brewis[1][2] (born: September 19, 1992 ),[4][5] better known online as hbomberguy, is a British[3] YouTuber who makes video essays, gaming videos and commentary videos about social and political topics. Several of his videos are framed as rebuttals to popular ideological or cultural movements, which he entitles with the subject, followed by "A Measured Response".[6]
Content
hbomberguy often makes videos supporting disliked video games and video game trends such as making videos in defense of Dark Souls II,[7] Pathologic,[8] speedrunning[9] and more. He has also criticized games such as Fallout 3 in one of his most popular videos.[10]
Cultural Marxism
On December 10, 2015, hbomberguy made a video called Cultural Marxism: A Measured Response. In this video, he openly mocked and criticized the "Cultural Marxism" conspiracy theory as well as the alleged rampant anti-Semitism, white supremacy and obsession with the Soviet KGB that comes with it. In this video he critiqued Davis Aurini, The Golden One, the British National Party and RockingMrE, all believers in Cultural Marxism.[11]
Paul Joseph Watson rebuttal
On November 16, 2017, Paul Joseph Watson made a video called "The Truth About Soyboys" where he blames the soy crop on lowering the testosterone in men, adding to their estrogen and consequently turning them into "leftists".[12] On November 24, 2017, hbomberguy made a video debunking Paul’s claims, while also pointing out the "Brain Force" pills he advertises contain soy as one of the major ingredients.[13] He then put Paul’s claims to the test by eating a high soy diet for 30 days and studied the effects, and his levels remained unchanged.[14][15] Paul then made a "non-response" video where he impersonated Hbomber dressed in a wig mocking his talking points, which Brewis shot down for being too cowardly to even mention him by name and proceeded to debunk his claims a second time.[16]
2019 Donkey Kong livestream
In January 2019, Hbomberguy launched a Twitch livestream marathoning Donkey Kong, to fundraise for Mermaids UK. This raised around $360,000 (£275,000). Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, John Romero, Chelsea Manning, and Mara Wilson were involved. Hbomberguy wanted to support the charity after comedy writer Graham Linehan's opposition to Mermaids, reportedly due to spite, and was concerned about misinformation in media discussion about transgender people.[17][18][19]
Plagiarism callout
In December of 2023, hbomberguy made a nearly 4 hour long documentary called "Plagiarism and You(Tube)". The video initially presented itself as a calling out of several other YouTubers, including Filip Miucin, Cinemassacre, Internet Historian and Iilluminaughtii for engaging in plagiarism. He provided examples of how their video scripts often contained long passages from other works reused without credit, falsely presenting copied work as their original research, writing, and observations. However, halfway through the video he revealed the prior examples were actually meant to illustrate the issue of YouTube plagiarism broadly, particularly in how channels that are essentially content mills will copy material that is already publicly disseminated: what had actually prompted him to make the video—and what ended up being the focus for its remainder—was the case of James Somerton, who Brewis declared to be the most cynical and brazen of plagiarists. Brewis revealed through both pre-existing accusations and through his own research that Somerton had plagiarized nearly his entire library of videos from other sources, particularly smaller queer content creators. Brewis found this particularly egregious as Somerton claimed to be working in service of the queer community yet chose to credit more famous names while ignoring, blocking, or making false accusations of harassment to smaller creators who called him out for stealing their content.[20]
The video generated significant discussion among other YouTubers and across social media. Brewis' comprehensive presentation of evidence of plagiarism is largely cited for Somerton taking down nearly his entire online presence, briefly making two (poorly-received) attempts at apologies and a scuttled attempt at a comeback after faking his death. With the exception of Somerton, the other subjects have yet to acknowledge hbomberguy's video, although their presence and the evidence found and presented by hbomberguy has been shown to have affected their follower counts. A second, shorter video about Iilluminaughtii — whom hbomberguy noted was more of a secondary target, but he found too many examples of plagiarism to just ignore ― was posted on his second channel.[21]
