Jibanyan's Secret Past (Japanese: ジバニャン誕生の秘密だニャン! Jibanyan Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan!), is the 100th episode of the Yo-kai Watch anime series. It was broadcasted in Japan on December 25, 2015 and in the United States on November 17, 2018.
Summary
In this special episode, Whisper decides to tell the viewers about a story on what happened to Jibanyan after he became a Yo-kai.
Plot
Prologue
At the beginning, Whisper breaks the fourth wall in order to talk to the viewer and thanks them for keeping up with the series. Whisper then tells the viewer that everything that they've been seeing up to this point is part of a bigger story and goes on to introduce a special origin story of the main characters for this episode.
First, he tells the origin story of Nathan Adams, who was born in Springdale with average height and average crying just like who he is up to now until he had a fated encounter on that day in Mount Wildwood. After the sudden abruptness of Nate's origin story, Whisper gracefully goes on to tell his origin story but it cuts to the priest sealing Whisper inside the Crank-a-kai.
Much to his disappointment at the sudden end of his origin story, Whisper goes on to introduce Jibanyan's where Whisper explains about Rudy's sacrifice at the intersection to save his owner Amy. When Rudy ascends into the sky, Whisper explains from this point on will be what happened to Jibanyan after that.
Jibanyan's Secret Past
After Jibanyan falls down from the heavens, he gets up and looks at his surroundings. He notices that he is at the intersection before he gets hit by a truck and sent into the sky. While Jibanyan walks back and laments about his death at the area, he meets three cat Yo-kai that are just like him and ask Jibanyan to look at this reflection on the glass shelves at the fishmonger.
Surprised at his appearance on the glass reflections, Jibanyan fully realizes that he became a Yo-kai. One of the other cat Yo-kai asks Jibanyan to look at his Yo-kai Medal, where he finds it inside his haramaki and remember his name fully. After being unimpressed by Jibanyan's name, the cat Yo-kai introduce themselves as Pounce de Leon, Sir Pouncalot and Alfred which get a mixed reaction from the former.
After Pounce de Leon pokes fun at Jibanyan's overall appearance, Sir Pouncalot suggests Jibanyan to join a group called the Cat Crosswalk Association, comprised of other cat Yo-kai who live on an overpass. Pounce de Leon explains that Sir Pouncalot is the leader, but then finds out that there is a cat Yo-kai landlady in charge of the group who asks them to pay rent.
Sir Pouncalot explains that moving into the overpass isn't easy, and they offer Jibanyan to take on the challenge of living there. Despite the intimidated looks from them, the setting suddenly moves onto a contest-like format where Sir Pouncalot introduces Jibanyan to the cat Yo-kai in the audience. Pounce de Leon challenges Jibanyan to talk about his life before he became a Yo-kai, starting with his former owner.
Before Pounce de Leon goes on to introduce Jibanyan's previous owner, he asks what Sir Pouncalot's previous owner was like. The audience gets excited after he tells them about the address of where the owner lived, further explaining that the owner was an old lady named Granny Gun and liked the smell of dust whenever she swept the cleaned the house with her broom.
In the middle of Alfred's imaginative happiness, Pounce de Leon asks Jibanyan what his previous owner, Amy was like. Jibanyan explained that she smelled of a certain scent of a shampoo brand that gave him a reminder that she was home, levelling the quality higher than that Sir Pouncalot was reminded of, thus making the audience surprised and Alfred overly jealous of Jibanyan.
When Alfred calms herself down with some green tea, Pounce de Leon moves onto the next topic which is about the food their former owner fed them. In an attempt to outnumber Jibanyan again, Sir Pouncalot tells the audience that he can even eat the head of a fish which surprises the audience and even Alfred herself. Jibanyan explains that he had something different to eat every day of the week, where the audience reacts in suspense but surprises them when he talks about the high-priced cat food he has on Sundays.
Pounce de Leon hurriedly moves onto the next topic after Alfred sulks to herself again, which is about where they slept. Pounce de Leon explains that he slept under the wooden deck, while Sir Pouncalot slept inside a cardboard box located near the entrance of the house. While Sir Pouncalot and Alfred constantly boast about it, Pounce de Leon asks Jibanyan for his input, where responds by saying that he slept with Amy in her bed.
The three cat Yo-kai get overly jealous of Jibanyan, while Alfred has a rages in a fit of anger. Pounce de Leon rushes to the final topic where it revolves around how they got hit by a vehicle and suffered death. Sir Pouncalot emotionally explains that while his owner took him the vet, he carelessly jumped out of the cat cage onto the crosswalk and died by getting hit by an oncoming car. When he goes on to tell his story, Jibanyan says that he saved Amy from a truck while losing his life in the process and recalled Amy's words on the fateful day.
Sir Pouncalot start to shed a tear at Jibanyan's backstory while Pounce de Leon, Alfred and everybody else in the audience cries. He emotionally declares Jibanyan worthy enough to live in the overpass, allowing him to live there among the others for a while.
A long amount of time later, Sir Pouncalot asks Jibanyan on how he is doing at his new home where he responds by saying it is lazy. Sir Pouncalot starts to bring up the topic of reincarnation, which suddenly gets Jibanyan interested hoping that he would meet Amy again someday but he mishears her words of calling him a "lame cat", piquing his interest to go to the intersection and fight off oncoming trucks, hoping he would be reborn as a cat.
Jibanyan shows Sir Pouncalot, Pounce de Leon and Alfred the intersection he wants to train in so he could fulfil his dream of being strong. Surprised at Jibanyan's absurd idea, Sir Pouncalot tries to punch the oncoming truck but gives up and urges Pounce de Leon to do it instead. He goes into the crosswalk and attempts to hit the car but gets sent into the sky.
In a second attempt, Sir Pouncalot tries to punch the vehicle again but rushes back to the sidewalk after unexpectedly finding out that it is a steamroller. Jibanyan eventually steps in to the crosswalk so he could punch the truck, but he gets hit. They decide to combine their strength by trying to punch the vehicle, but they all get hit at once.
After many failed attempts, everyone else gives up except for Jibanyan who is still determined to get stronger so when he gets reincarnated, he could show Amy that he can beat up cars that come into her way. Building up his determination, he performs his Soultimate Move Paws of Fury onto the oncoming truck, delivering a much greater effect than their previous efforts. Despite their shocked reaction from the three cat Yo-kai, he still gets sent flying into the air.
Whisper explains that it was how Jibanyan went out of his way to beat up trucks and practiced at the intersection ever since, until a certain human met him claiming that the story would be best told at another time.

Trivia
- It is revealed that reincarnation is a thing that happens to Yo-kai. Once they die in their Yo-kai form, they are then reborn into the world.
- The episode's Japanese title is a reference to the Japanese subtitle of Yo-kai Watch: The Movie which is called The Secret of the Creation, Nyan! (Japanese: 映画 妖怪ウォッチ 誕生の秘密だニャン! Eiga Yōkai Wotchi: Tanjō no Himitsu da-nyan!), as well as it premiering on television after its initial airing in Japan.
- The title on Amazon Instant Video includes "Nate's Secret Past" and "Whisper's Secret Past", despite two of them being fake-out gags at the beginning of the episode. Had the episode used that title, it would have caused confusion with the latter's exact same episode name.
- This episode's alternative dub aired in South Africa on July 28, 2019, listed under the title "100th Episode".
- This is currently the last full episode that has been dubbed into English in its entirety three times over, without any major edits in the Los Angeles dub.
- This is the eighth absence of Hailey and Usapyon ever since their introduction.
Dub differences
- As this is the 98th episode to be dubbed into English, and the 96th full half-hour to air, the reference to it being the 100th episode (as EP082 and EP091 were skipped) was removed.
- The title card was removed, despite the sound effect being left in.
- Strangely, this is the second time that Rudy's corpse wasn't zoomed in, the first being in Jibanyan's Secret. It was originally zoomed in during The Spooky Intersection.
- The scene where Jibanyan is asked to look at his Yo-kai Medal to find his name was slightly written over due to western localized Yo-kai Medals not having Japanese names on them, also creating a bit of a consistency error.
Errors
- Jibanyan previously explained to Nate that he no longer lives in the intersection anymore since other cat Yo-kai took over the place, but it always seemed to be like that from the start as seen in this episode, even having a rent system.
