Blu-ray Player is an app for Xbox One consoles and the Xbox Series X that gives the user the ability to play DVD and Blu-ray media discs from their console. The app was released in 2013 during the Xbox One's launch.

Surprisingly, the app does not come pre-installed on every console and must be downloaded from the Microsoft Store for the users console to be able to play this type of media.

Navigation

Upon inserting a DVD or Blu-ray disc into the console, the app will launch automatically. From here, the console will behave like an ordinary DVD or Blu-ray player, with the Xbox One controller acting as a remote. The controller can be used to navigate through DVD and Blu-ray menus and access a variety of different remote shortcuts such as pause, play, stop, fast-forward, and rewind. The Xbox One Media Remote can also be used to with the app as a regular TV remote.

If the app is launched without a disc inserted in the console, they will be prompted with a message saying that there is "No disc in the drive." If the app is launched while a game disc is in the console, the app will produce an error message saying that "We are having trouble reading this. Make sure it is a Blu-ray or DVD. If it is a game, launch it from your games & apps instead. (0x91d70000)"

Trivia

• The Blu-ray player app can still be installed on the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition and Xbox Series S, despite both console not having disc drives meaning no media discs can be put inside either console.
  • If the app is launched on either of these consoles they will be prompted with a message that displays "This app requires an Xbox with a disc drive."
