Khan is the centaur word for a chieftain[1][2][3] who leads one of the centaur clans or tribes. The title is used by both Kalimdor's centaur and the Maruuk. Among Kalimdorian centaur, the title is placed before the name (e.g. Khan Shodo), whereas among the Maruuk, it is placed after (e.g. Sansok Khan).
The foremost khan among the Maruuk is the Khanam Matra of Clan Teerai, who acts as the cultural khan of all Maruuk clans[4] and is protected by the khansguard.
The first khans of Kalimdor's centaur were the first five children of Zaetar and Princess Theradras.[5][6] Kalimdorian khans can have their own guards[7] and advisors,[8] and their sons may help them rule.[9] Most clans only have one khan at a time, but the Galak tribe is ruled by two khans (Ablinh and Blizh). When Aratas united the clans of Kalimdor, he was given the title of High Khan.[10]
