Weeekly (Hangul:위클리; known as FAVEGIRLS and PlayM Girls pre-debut), is a South Korean girl group formerly under IST Entertainment. The group consists of six members: Soojin, Soeun, Monday, Jaehee, Jihan, and Zoa. Originally as 7, Weeekly debuted on June 30, 2020 with the release of their first mini album We Are.
History
2018-2020: Pre Debut
Since the very beginning of the group, its lineup of trainees saw many changes. On September 1, 2018, FAVE Entertainment announced that trainees Lee Soomin, Park Soyeon, and Kim Bowon had left the agency and the group after terminating their contracts.[1]
On October 18, FAVE Entertainment announced its plans to debut a new girl group, tentatively named FAVEGIRLS, sometime in 2019. A pre-debut showcase, titled WE?, that would feature seven "candidates" of the group, was set to be held on November 11.[2] Starting on October 21, the seven trainees were revealed every day via social media. The first trainee to be revealed was Lee Soojin, followed by Monday, Park Haelin, Shin Jiyoon, Park Soeun, Kim Gaeun, and finally Lee Jaehee on October 27.[3]
On February 13, 2019, Kakao M announced that FAVE Entertainment and Plan A Entertainment would be merging. The company's new name, Play M Entertainment, was announced on March 29.[4][5] Thus, the group's tentative name was changing to Play M GIRLS and debut preparations were delayed.
In July, trainee Park Haelin left Play M and the group to focus on her studies.[6] In August, Kim Gaeun also left the agency and the group.[7] By October, trainees Han Jihyo and Jo Hyewon had officially joined the pre-debut lineup.[8]
On April 28, 2020, the group uploaded a video, titled 'Who R U?', to their official YouTube channel. Through the video, the stage names for Jihan (formerly Han Jihyo) and Zoa (formerly Cho Hyewon) were revealed.[9]
2020: Debut with We Are, Fandom Name, and First Comeback with We Can
On May 7, 2020, Play M confirmed Play M GIRLS would be making their debut sometime in June.[10]On May 11, the group's debuting name Weeekly and its members were revealed.[11]On June 11, a teaser scheduler revealed the release of the group's first mini album, We Are, was set for June 30.[12]On this day, Weeekly officially debuted with the mini album and its title track "Tag Me (@Me)". Their debut showcase was ultimately cancelled due to a fire that broke out in a nearby building.[13]
On August 20, an official poll on the group's Daum Cafe revealed the group's official fandom name to be "Daileee", which means "without Daileee (Daily), Weeekly cannot exist."[14] The official announcement was made three days later on August 23.[15]
On September 8, a source from Play M Entertainment revealed the group was preparing for their first ever comeback, planning for release in October.[16] On September 21, it was announced that the group's second mini album, We Can, would be released on October 13.[17] On this day, the mini album, along with its title track "Zig Zag", were released.
On September 25, the group released their first OST single, "Boom Chiki", for the animated survival show My Dream is Ryan.
2021: Comeback with We Play, Play Game : Holiday, Jiyoon's Hiatus
On February 18, 2021, Weeekly released their second OST single, "Wake Up", for the KBS drama Hello, Me!.
On February 22, local news outlet Sport TV News reported that Weeekly was preparing for a comeback in March with a new album.[18] Later that day, the reports were confirmed by PlayM Entertainment.[19]
A image teaser posted on the group's social media accounts announced their third mini album, We Play, would be released on March 17.[20] On this day, the mini album, along with its title track "After School", were released.
On July 13, Play M Entertainment confirmed Weeekly was preparing for a comeback, aiming for an early August release.[21] On July 15,, an image teaser posted across the group's social medias announced their fourth mini album, titled Play Game : Holiday, would be released on August 4.[22] On this day, the mini album, along with its title track "Holiday Party" was released.
On August 1, Play M Entertainment released a statement announcing that member Jiyoon would be going on hiatus from all activities due to reoccurring stress and anxiety. Thus, the group's mini album Play Game : Holiday, will be promoted as six members.[23][24]
On December 14, IST Entertainment announced that Jiyoon's health has improved and she would be returning from her hiatus to group activities the day afterward.[25][26]
2022: "Play Game : AWAKE", Jiyoon's departure
On February 15, 2022, it was announced that Weeekly will be making a comeback with their first single album, "Play Game : AWAKE", on March 7.[27]
On February 28, IST Entertainment announced that Jiyoon would not be taking part in the group's promotions for their then-upcoming single album due in order to focus on treating and recovering from her anxiety.[28] Nearly four months later, on June 1, Jiyoon's official departure from Weeekly was announced.[29]
Weeekly was chosen as Spotify EQUAL's Artist of the Month for June 2022.[30]
2023: Official colors, "Good Day (Special Daileee)", ColoRise
On February 1, 2023, the group revealed their official fan colors to be Orchid Bloom, Banana Cream and Beach Glass.[31]
On September 4, 2023, it was announced that Weeekly would be releasing a special digital single, titled "Good Day (Special Daileee)" on September 12, ahead of their full-fledged comeback in October.[32][33]
On October 16, a tracklist was posted which announced that the group will be releasing their fifth mini album, ColoRise, on November 1.[34]
2024: "Stranger", Bliss
On January 11, the group announced that they will release their fourth digital single "Stranger" on January 25 as a pre-release for their upcoming mini album.[35]
On June 12, IST Entertainment announced that the group will comeback with their sixth mini album on July 9.[36] On June 19, they released a promotion scheduler for Bliss.[37]
2025: Departure from IST Entertainment
On February 25, 2025 it was announced that the members of Weeekly would be leaving IST Entertainment after their exclusive contracts have ended. The status of the group is undecided as of now.[38]
