The general-purpose machine gun (GPMG) is an air-cooled, belt-fed medium machine gun used by NATO forces. Modern GPMGs fire full-power rifle cartridges such as the 7.62×51mm NATO and the 7.62×54mmR. The most common GPMG machine gun in NATO service is the FN MAG a Belgian 7.62 mm general-purpose machine gun, designed in the early 1950s at Fabrique Nationale (FN) by Ernest Vervier.
The FN MAG in British service is infantry version L7 and the armored vehicle mount L37. The Americans knows this weapon as the M240.
