The F-104J RYU is an aircraft available to Japan and BLUFOR decks in Wargame: Red Dragon.
History
The F-104J Ryu is a single-seat, single-engine, "T-Tailed" fighter. It is the Japanese variant of the F-104, initially selected to fulfill Japan's Air Superiority needs in November of 1960. Constructed by Lockheed early on, then taken over by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, deliveries of the 210 F-104J began in 1961, and were completed by 1966. The F-104J carries a 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannon, and up to four AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. These were replaced by and F-4EJ F-15J in the mid 1980s.
Overview
The F-104J is a relatively inexpensive Air Superiority fighter available to Japanese and Blue Dragons decks. It carries a 20mm Vulcan cannon and four AAM-1 Air-to-Air missiles as its armament. The F-104J is equipped with moderate ECM (20%) for defense against long range radar-guided threats. Its Vulcan cannon also allows the aircraft to be used in strafing runs against lightly armored vehicles and infantry, while its AAM-1 missile compliment is useful against helicopters and at short ranges against enemy fighters.
The F-104J has several drawbacks, however. It has no long-range missile option, its ECM is not particularly powerful, and its speed is slow for a fighter. Its AAM-1 also has poor accuracy and maneuverability. The F-104J, then, does provide a fair helicopter-hunter option for its cost, or expedient interceptor against incoming strike aircraft, but will have difficulty achieving air superiority against threat fighters.
