Success and failure, heads and tails… None of it matters to me anymore. After coming this far, do you really think you have any chance of fighting back? The two of you were only able to crawl through the dirt because you could not leave the territory of fragile children of man. Kneel before me as you witness history. This is 100% success!!
~ Othinus to Fiamma and Ollerus.
These small fights are such a pain. I think I’ll just end the world.
~ Othinus' most famous quote before destroying the world.

Othinus, also known as One-Eyed Othinus, is a major character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.

She is a Magic God, and was the leader of GREMLIN, who is hellbent on regaining her original powers as a complete Magic God. She is also the former archenemy of Ollerus.

She is voiced by Asami Seto in Japanese.

Appearance

Referred to as One-Eyed Othinus, Othinus appears as a young girl around the age of 14 with long, wavy blond hair and an eyepatch over her right eye. It is revealed that she had her right eye removed so she could drink from the well of wisdom. Her remaining left eye is glittery green and with slit-like iris. She is usually seen wearing a revealing outfit along with a cape, a ribbon wrapped around her and a wide brimmed hat with a pointed tip, showing traces of a witch-like attire.

Personality

Othinus' behavior and actions showcase the mentality of a madwoman guided by desperation and longing. She was a person who craved knowledge back in her original world and would go to extreme lengths to obtain it, such as gouging out her own eye or even hanging herself. When she finally acquired such knowledge and the power with it, she became an immensely powerful being known as a Magic God, she began to reconstruct the world the way she saw fit. However, even though she had gotten everything she had ever wanted, she felt nostalgic of her original world and never realized how fortunate she was to have lived there. Due to seemingly warping reality multiple times, Othinus had forgotten what the world was like before the changes. Her desire to return back to that world is what is really drove her to action in the first place. Unfortunately, she can only make changes, not undo them.

In her initial introduction, Othinus was portrayed as a stereotypical sociopath: ruthless, power-hungry, arrogant, and cold-hearted. She is willing to use any means necessary to achieve her goals, regardless of the destruction and suffering her ambitions might bring to others. Othinus has no qualms about threatening, harming or even killing anyone who displeases her, whether enemy or ally. Furthermore, Othinius is extremely manipulative, deceptive and cunning, able to manipulate the loose members of GREMLIN into doing her bidding so she and her inner circle didn't have to show themselves. In addition to this, Othinus is quite treacherous, as her namesake Odin is the god of betrayal, and will often cast aside her subordinates to get her way, as shown when she revealed that she had just been using the entirety of GREMLIN as a scapegoat while she herself completes the real Gungnir behind everyone's backs.

Due to her immense power and divine status, Othinus has a severe god complex, outright stating that she is a god and often comparing herself to Ollerus, who is deemed as a failure. Her ego is only boosted after completing Gungnir as she destroys the world and boasts about her victory. She then subjects Touma Kamijou to an untold amount of suffering and death by constantly reshaping reality to what the narration describes to be over a billion worlds. However, this is because Othinus is both afraid of the Imagine Breaker and is afraid to get rid of it, due to it being the universe’s reference point and can return it back to its original state. Thus, rather than killing him, Othinus decided to break Touma’s will and extract the Imagine Breaker from him.

After defeating Touma, Othinus realizes that she had been so obsessed with finding a way to return to her original world, that she had been willing to hurt and antagonize everybody, and that she had forgotten the real reason she wanted this: to find someone who understood her. She then realizes it has been so long that she can barely even remember her original world, and that Touma's world wasn't so bad. Upon discovering that Touma is someone who truly understands her and being touched that he trusted her to use Imagine Breaker better than he did, she instead restores the world back  to the way it was, and resolves to be killed to atone for her sins.

Following the events in Denmark, Othinus becomes more easygoing in terms of personality but still retains her haughtiness and ego, despite losing most of her godly powers. She has also become incredibly attached to Touma and truly cares about him. Ollerus states that if Touma were to die in front of her eyes, she would become a more frightening monster than anything she had shown before. However, Othinus still arrogantly refers to Touma as "human" and can be quite violent when annoyed by him too much, though Touma enjoys this and it's has little to no effect on him. Othinus often behaves very serious and pragmatic and likes to overexplain certain things. In spite of being full of bravado, she's a lonely person, and is softhearted beyond her perceived stubbornness.

Biography

Past

Over an unspecified number of years, Othinus, though she might have gone by a different name back then, was obsessed with attaining "ultimate knowledge" that would make her a god. Eventually, she traveled to Denmark and went to the lake where Egeskov Castle currently stands. When there, she proceeded to conduct an enormous ritual, which involved her sacrificing her right eye and hanging herself to obtain the body and powers of a Magic God. After becoming a magic god and gaining all the knowledge she's ever wanted, she later took the name "Odin" and inspired many legends with either portrayed her as an eccentric old man or a barbaric and vicious god of war.

Othinus then proceeded to warp the world according to her own image, manipulating the metaphysical Phases of reality. However, she later yearned for her original world, and despite the fact that she could use the Imagine Breaker to change the world back, her hesitations prevented her from doing so. For there was hope that she could make the world into her original world as she saw in her mind. Moreover, there was a hope for her that she could just bring the world into a new form through phase-shifting and just settle there. Regardless, she suffered for it, and for countless phase shifts she was worn down by the suffering that she felt in each of them.

At some point in time, she would resurface and later took back her title of Magic God from Ollerus, eventually earning her his animosity. After the events of World War III, she formed GREMLIN for the purpose of constructing the Lance of Gungnir.

New Testament

Throughout the first half of A Certain Magical Index: New Testament, Othinus and her ilk attempts to create the Lance of Gungnir while causing widespread havoc in the world, from invading Hawaii to igniting a war with Academy City. Outwardly, it seems that Gremlin had the objective of destroying the Science Side and proving magic's superiority. However, this was all a ploy to create the lance of Gungnir in order for Othinus to grant them their selfish wishes.

Othinus is largely absent from the first few novels, only appearing at the end of NT Volume 4, after she planned to use the distortions in Baggage City to create a holistic esper. After Marian Slingeneyer is defeated by Touma Kamijou, Othinus immediately attacks him and severs his right arm. She also crushes the invisible thing beyond the right hand with relative ease. She also destroys the sword Dáinsleif and then attempts to finish Touma off for good, only to be stopped by Ollerus and Fiamma of the Right. After battling with them for a bit, Othinus decides to retreat, taking Marian with her and the recently deceased Kagun Kihara (aka Bersi) was later revived by Othinus.

Later, Othinus plots to capture Fräulein Kreutune and turn her into a holistic esper. She sends Marian, Thor with Mjölnir to Academy City to kidnap Kreutune. However, Thor later betrays Gremlin and seeks to rescue Kreutune from the Windowless Building and prevent her from being used by GREMLIN in their plans. After their plans are foiled by Touma and his allies, Othinus meets the members of Gremlin at the port of Tokyo Bay and punishes Thor (which is actually Ollerus in disguise) for his failure and betrayal by cutting off his arm with her powers. However, the magic she used ended up being in the negative 50% of the infinite possibilities, so as a result her own right arm started to fall. She then decides to pick up the organs of the original Teitoku Kakine, who was completely comprised of his own dark matter and use him as a substitute to begin manufacturing the spear.

Gremlin Invades Tokyo

Othinus has Gremlin move their main base of operations, Sargasso, to the port of Japan instead of directly attacking Academy City to prevent any and all opposition to their plans. They also begin making preparations to create Gungnir and Othinus then assigns each of the members to fulfil certain tasks. She also assigns "Thor" to eliminate any attackers so they do not interfere with the creation of the lance.

She and Bersi prepare to use Kakine's Dark Matter to assist in Gungnir's creation. However, Kakine regains his consciousness and gains control of his body. He then proceeds to devour the equipment attached to him and attempts to attack Othinus and Bersi, only to be quickly subdued by Othinus and crumples him into a mass the size of a volleyball then tosses it to Bersi and commands him to do what needs to be done with it. She later uses Kakine's dark matter to create a white girl that acts as a pseudo holistic esper. However, as the process to create Gungnir continues, Othinus begins to bleed from her eye and tells Marian to overlook the lance's production as she mends herself.

Othinus later confronts Ollerus and exposes his disguise as Thor. They eventually fight each other, until Ollerus uses the Turn into a fairy spell against Othinus in hopes of robbing her of her Magic God powers. However, Othinus uses her powers to decieve his senses and mockingly thanks Ollerus for giving her a means to finally defeat him. She then uses the same move against Ollerus to turn him into a fairy. Ollerus then staggers and says that his second hope is still on track. Othinus is then stabbed by Fiamma of the Right who used the same turn into a fairy spell against her. Touma and his allies eventually arrive on the scene and see Ollerus collapse. Othinus tells Touma that he came too late and then pulls the lance of Gungnir out of her right eye socket. While Othinus laughs, Touma becomes speechless. She then declares that she is now a complete magic god by having both solutions at once to which Touma just screams. Othinus then lightly spins the lance around in one hand and points its tip toward the heavens and says that the little fights around her are troublesome, thus she'll just end the world.

Just as Othinus says this, the entire reality is destroyed in an instant.

Endless Hells

As Touma wakes up in the Black World, a phase-shifted universe that's entirely pitch black and devoid of light or life, Othinus mocks him for being unable to save the world. Touma then remembers that his Imagine Breaker is a reference point for the world and tells Othinus that he will find a way to revert the world back to normal. However, Othinus tells him that while she can't kill him as that would result in the Imagine Breaker being transferred elsewhere so she decides to break him mentally and extract the the Imagine Breaker from him. When Touma tries to fight Othinus, she simply waves Gungnir and warps the world as she believes that fighting a puny human would be beneath her.

She then creates several thousands parallel worlds to break Touma's will, such as the Alpha World, a version of the world where Touma is viewed as the epitome of evil and is public enemy number one. In this world, Touma is hunted down by various governments and even his loved ones want him dead, such as his parents, his classmates Seiri Fukiyose and Pierce Aogami, and lastly his teacher Komoe Tsukuyomi. In the "Beta World", Touma is replaced by an alternate version of himself who is perfect in everyway. While Touma is contemplating about his identity, Othinus asks his name, what kind of person he is originally, the kinds of people he is surrounded with, as well as the person he wanted to protect. She tells him that as thanks for letting her kill some time, she will return him to his former position as long as he tells her his proper name.

Othinus later subjects Touma to countless worlds where he dies in gruesome and horrific ways as a means of torturing him even further. While Touma manages to endure all of this, its only after Othinus creates the "Omega World", a utopian world where Touma doesn't exist and everyone (including all of Touma's past enemies and the deceased characters in the series) have all been granted salvation without Touma's help, does Touma finally become despondent. Othinus embraces Touma's shoulders from behind, while holding the lance which is within reach of his right hand. She then tells him that it must be right to return it to normal and that he should test out his own idea of justice by rejecting this perfect world. Eventually, Touma attempts to commit suicide, which only interfered by the Will of the Whole Misaka Network.

After regaining his spirit, Touma confronts Othinus at the schoolyard of his high school and challenges her to a duel. As Touma and Othinus fight, Othinus sends out several explosions which Touma negates with his right hand. However, its revealed that Othinus' battle with Touma has been looping over and over again due to the former's subconscious fear of losing the Imagine Breaker. After the 10,031st fight, she finally decides to end their protracted battle but suddenly she feels an intense headache. Touma explains that fighting with a weak opponent would wear down her mind at a faster rate as compared to his case wherein fighting a very strong opponent, would wear his mind at a slower rate.

Othinus uses every attack in her arsenal to finish off Touma for good, such as throwing Gungnir at him with a tremendous force that the space itself has torn apart and using her crossbow to fire several arrows at him. After Touma is mortally wounded by her last attack, he accepts his death and tells Othinus with his dying breath that he genuinely believes that Othinus would make better use of the Imagine Breaker. As Touma dies, Othinus realizes that she no longer remembers why she wanted to go back to her original world and that what she really wanted is someone who understood her. She also comes to the realization that by putting Touma through this torture, he essentially became the one person who could truly understand her pain. She decides to restore Touma's original world.

Powers and Abilities

Former Powers

50/50 Magic God

  • Endless Possibilities: As a Magic God, Othinus is a perfect and pure magician that encompasses every possibility and has nearly absolute power. However, this creates an omnipotence paradox as a result, as all possibilities are open for her power including all negative possibilities, like losing against a weak opponent. The paradox produces a situation which severely weakens Othinus because her absolute power only works 50% of the time. If she lands on the negative side of the infinite possibilities, she can also receive a form of backlash, hurting herself. However, when she lands on the positive side of the infinite possibilities, Othinus' magic increases tenfold.
  • Superhuman Strength: Othinus is shown to have incredible strength, as she was easily able to crush Touma Kamijou's right hand as well as the invisible thing that came out of it with pure force alone. She was also able to rip off Ollerus' arm, dig into Teitoku Kakine's neck and crumple him into a ball.
  • Wall of Explosions: Othinus can produce a seemingly endless barrage of hundreds of millions of explosions in an instant. The explosions are individually weak, but all together they are stated to be so powerful that the extreme compression of space may twist the continuity of time.
  • Einherjar: Othinus can bring back the dead as Einherjar, mindless flesh puppets. The process of turning a dead body into an Einherjar is not known, but it involves the insertion of several pieces of gold in the body. Only humans can be turned into Einherjar, even a failed Magic God like Ollerus is far enough to not be a valid corpse. The corpse won't decompose and will retain the abilities and skills the person had while alive. Einherjar are dependent on Othinus' power to function and will follow any commands she gives. Einherjar don't need to breathe and don't feel any emotion.
  • Turn into a Fairy: An anti-god spell based out of the historical fact on how pagan gods were turned into fairies during the rise of Christianity. The spell appears as a glowing stake that comes out of the user's open palms that is used by piercing the target's chest. The spell, if working properly, can thoroughly destroy the interior of the target's body and otherwise depower the target. For example, Othinus' Magic God powers were tilted towards 0% chance of success after being hit by the spell, and while it took a long time, the spell eventually almost destroyed her if not for outside interference. Ollerus himself was reduced to the level of a normal magician after Othinus used his own spell against him.
  • Othinus' Crossbow: A spell that fires ten arrows in quick succession. All of these arrows hold enough power to destroy one or two planets, even though they are fired with such speed, that instead of causing an explosion they would pierce right through them without the impact propagating. When utilizing this spell the world can be heard creaking, as Othinus uses the world itself as the crossbow that launches the arrows. Because of this fact, the arrows can be fired from multiple directions: not only can they be fired from Othinus' general direction, they can fall vertically from the heavens to smash an enemy, they can be fired from behind the enemy or they can burst up from the ground. Additionally, Othinus can grant her arrows special properties, such as making them surpass the restrictions of the third dimension, making the arrow teleport and instantly appear by splitting space open; or she can make the arrow ignore the concept of numbers and cause a torrential rain of arrows that colored the night sky like stars.
  • Bone Boat: A spell made for teleportation-like movement. It works by first moving the planet beneath Othinus to put her in the right position and then move all celestial bodies in the universe to fit the new positioning of the planet so that their position relative to each other didn't change. It is not very precise, as it is already difficult to arrive in the right country using it.

Complete Magic God

GungnirToaru Render
  • Gungnir: Othinus' primary weapon and the source of her great power. It's a 3m golden spear with a ribbon-like design intertwining with each other at the end of the handle and below the blade. With its help, she can manipulate probability, making it so that she has a 100% chance of success while using her powers through which she overcomes her previous 50% chance of success limitation. It is this weapon that makes her a full magic god. The lance itself has multiple properties as a weapon:
    • The lance was made to be thrown.
    • The lance will always hit its target once thrown.
    • The lance cannot be shot down or destroyed mid-flight.
    • The lance will always return to its owner’s hands after piercing the target.
    • That lance will destroy the symbols of human power. This last property is the one that puts Gungnir above the weapons of other gods. Rather than showing simple destructive power by blowing away a mountain or vaporizing the sea, it bluntly indicates the precedence of the god over humans. A human can not defeat a god, the convenience of the god has priority over everything in the human’s world and the workings of the world will act accordingly. Because of that, the instant the spear leaves Othinus' hands the world (universe) is blown to pieces. The world is completely destroyed as if space itself is being torn apart. s a fragment of the world approached with the force of a raging wave, it took on the shape of a giant lance. The walls of all the Phases are crushed, transformed into a swirl of deadly weapons resembling sharp shards of glass that gather in the shape of a giant lance, and approached their pitiful target as if to swallow him whole like a raging wave.
  • Phase Manipulation: As a full powered Magic God, Othinus wields a powerful version of reality warping which she achieves by creating, applying and manipulating the metaphysical phases that make up the world. She can instantly destroy the universe and manipulate and recreate it as she pleases. She can manipulate causality and change the natural laws.
  • Matter Manipulation: Othinus can freely control all matter in the universe.
  • Laws of Nature: Othinus can alter physical laws to whatever she wills. She can change the mathematical properties of things and the laws that govern them, such as turning 1 into one billion.
  • Time Manipulation: Othinus has control of time itself. She can change history entirely to her liking. She can freeze time and can even skip it to her desire.
  • Control over the dead and living: Othinus has total control over the dead and the living, being capable of resurrecting anyone and freely manipulating the living's minds, morals and points of view. Touma speculated this was a result of her perfecting her original Einherjar spell. This spell can't control beings who can't be technically be classified as "dead" or "alive", like the Will of the Whole Misaka Network (A thought entity born of the aggregation of egos and memories of all Sisters, alive and dead) or St. Germain (Another thought entity similar to a virus).
  • Mind Manipulation: Othinus can completely alter the memories of others and can make them act however she wishes. Her magic is strong enough to influence all seven billion people on the planet. She cannot influence her own memories however.

Abilities

Genius-Level Intellect: Even without her tremendous magical powers, Othinus has displayed to be an extraordinarily intelligent and clever individual. Her long lifespan has allowed Othinus to refine her intellectual aptitude to the highest degree, making her quite possibly one of the most intelligent beings in the entire universe. She is schooled in several millennia of history, warfare, philosophy, magic and science. Being a Magic God, Othinus possesses vast mystical knowledge and a deep understanding of the occult. She later acts as an advisor for Touma with her immense knowledge.

  • Master Tactician: Othinus is an exceptionally gifted strategist, able to effectively lead GREMLIN and instigate several events. In her quest to complete Gungnir, Othinus was able to create multiple plans that would ultimately further her main objective. Her strategical ingenuity was shown by how she was able to instruct her pawns into performing extremely complex, effective and well-coordinated plans which gave her enemies immense trouble. Furthermore, Othinus is also an exceedingly accomplished liar and manipulator, as shown when she tricked people that were loose members of GREMLIN into doing her bidding so she and her close affiliates didn't have to show themselves. She also used the entirety of GREMLIN as a scapegoat while she herself completes the real Gungnir behind everyone's backs.
