The Monkey Man is a minor antagonist in the 1981 action-adventure film Raiders Of the Lost Ark, the first installment in the Indiana Jones franchise.
He was a Cairo thief who was hired by the Nazis to spy on Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood and acted as their informant. Later on, the Monkey Man is tasked with executing the former.
He was portrayed by Vic Tablian, who also played Barranca in the same film.
Biography
After being hired by two German agents to spy on Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood, Monkey Man spies on them utilizing his pet monkey. He then reports to the German Agents of Jones' whereabouts. The agents then send a group of hired Cairo Thugs and a swordsman to deal with Jones, all unsuccessfully. However, the monkey does give away Marion’s hiding spot and leads to her capture and faked death.
Later in the film, Monkey Man sends his pet monkey to spy on Jones and his friend, Sallah, as they travel to an old man who may be able to read the ancient markers on Marion’s amulet. Meanwhile, The Monkey Man poisons a plate of Dates that were going to be served to Jones and Sallah. However, his plan to poison them fails when his monkey eats a date and dies. Sallah notices and takes Jones' from him. He is never seen again.
Appearance
The Monkey Man wore a reddish jacket over striped robes and wore sandals. He also had an eyepatch, indicating he lost it from unknown causes, and a scar underneath it. He wore a blue cap.
