Hauke

Hauke is a major antagonist in the 2023 action-adventure film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final installment of the Indiana Jones franchise.

He is a deranged and corpulent Neo-Nazi who works for the ex-Nazi and current NASA engineer Jürgen Voller. In 1969, Hauke is assigned by his boss to pursue the American archaeologist Indiana Jones, who tries to retrieve the Dial of Destiny, which Voller also desires.

He was portrayed by Olivier Richters who also portrayed Paul Van Hoven in Reacher.

History

Along with Klaber, Hauke is an American Neo-Nazi who assists Dr. Jürgen Voller in his plan to obtain both halves of Archimedes' Antikythera device and use it to travel back in time and assassinate Adolf Hitler in order to replace him with someone else (likely Voller himself) who would lead Germany to victory in World War II. Thus, Voller has Hauke and his other cohorts to observe Helena Shaw, daughter of the late Oxford University professor Basil Shaw, who helped the American archaeologist Indiana Jones to steal the Antikythera's first half from Voller back in 1944 while disrupting Colonel Weber's lootings.

In 1969, accompanied by his fellow Neo-Nazis and Voller's CIA handler Agent Mason, Hauke observes Helena in New York City, where she meets with Jones and talks him into taking her to Hunter College's archives to look for the Antikythera half, which he stored there. They follow her and watch at the two going into the archives before two college staff members interrupt them. This leads Hauke and Kalber to shoot them dead to get rid of any witnesses, much to Mason's anger. Undeterred, Hauke and his companions enter into the archives and demand Jones, who is giving the Antikythera half to Shaw, at gunpoint to hand it over, but Jones throws some shelves onto them while Helena escapes with the incomplete artifact. Hauke and his men capture Indy, but are forced to take him on foot when an Apollo 11 ticker tape parade stops Klaber's truck. Indy takes advantage of this to hit Hauke and Klaber, who immediately go after time, with Hauke taking a man off a car and driving it to chase Jones in spite of the man's female passenger being at his side, but Jones manages to escape through a nearby subway.

Hauke accompanies Voller and the others to Morocco, where Helena plans to sell the Antikythera half at an illegal auction in Hotel L'Atlantique. When Indiana reveals Voller's Nazi ties and cracks his whip to intimidate all buyers and Neo-Nazis, Hauke pulls out his gun like most of the people there and shoot at Jones, who opts to escape along with Helena and her teen sidekick Teddy Kumar in a tuk-tuk. At one point, Hauke approaches their tuk-tuk and shoots at them with a machine gun, but Indy deviates the gun with his feet, though Hauke and Klaber are still able to knock Helena off their car when she strangles Voller in an attempt to retrieve the Antikythera half, with Helena and her friends being forced to stop chasing them to due the intervention of her former fiancée Aziz Rahim. However, Mason and her CIA team arrive and arrest the Neo-Nazis, informing them about the consequences that await for them at the United States for the murders Hauke and Klaber committed. However, Hauke and Klaber proceed to murder all of their CIA captors and take the plane for themselves, setting out to Greece to recover the Graphikos tablets where they can find the directions to the Antikythera's other half.

Voller tracks the Graphikos down to a shipwreck in the Aegean Sea, so Hauke accompanies his boss there with the others and wait for Jones and his friends to retrieve the tablet with Renaldo and his diving team. As they succeed, Hauke and Klaber murder all of the ship's crew (with Klaber even snapping the oxygen cable of one of Renaldo's divers to drown him) before Voller takes Indy, Helena, Teddy and Renaldo prisoners. However, after Renaldo's death, Helena distracts Voller and his men long enough to use a dynamite stick to scare them all and take their ship to escape. Somehow, Voller and his men find their way out of the boat and set course to Sicily, where Archimedes' Tomb must be.

Once in Sicility, Hauke, Klaber and Voller come across Teddy as he buys an ice cream for himself, leading Hauke to easily capture him, allowing Voller to take Teddy as a hostage, with Hauke handcuffing Kumar to himself. With no time to lose, Jones and Shaw find the location of Archimedes' Tomb in the Ear of Dionysus caverns. Tracking them down, Hauke accompanies his superior and his fellow men to the caves after they murder a worker who tells them that the cave is closed. However, as they cross a wooden bridge, Teddy decides to escape and manages to break the bridge, sending himself and Hauke to the water, after which Voller opts to leave them behind to keep moving. As the two struggle in the violent waters, Hauke and Teddy arrive to a broken underwater gate, which Teddy easily crosses due to being small enough, but for good measure, handcuffs Hauke to the gate. Unable to escape or move, Hauke is left with no other option than scream as he drowns in the gate while Teddy escapes and finds his way back to his friends.

Trivia

  • Hauke is Olivier Richters' first major role in a feature-length production overall.
  • Hauke's role in the film mirrors that of the late Pat Roach in the first three Indiana Jones films and Igor Jijikine's in the fourth Indiana Jones film, where Roach played big, burly henchmen willing to fight against Indiana Jones only to be gruesomely killed as a result, like the German Mechanic from Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Chief Guard of Indiana Jones and the Temple Doom before Jijikine filled in that role as Antonin Dovchenko from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull after Roach's passing in 2004. Jijikine didn't return for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny due to unknown reasons, leading Olivier Richters to fill the "tough guy" role.
  • In the lead-up to the film, Hauke was for some reason listed as "Actor" in the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) website, a fact that Richters credited to how secretive Lucasfilm was with his role.
  • From all the main of Jürgen Voller's Neo-Nazis, Hauke is the only one who doesn't get to time travel to 212 BC as he gets killed before Voller uses the Dial of Destiny.
  • Hauke is the first and only villain not defeated by Indiana Jones.
