“ | Miri Sugo: Dont misunderstand Denji! Yes we set your house on fire!!, But only because its the key to saving the world!. | „ |
~ Miri confronting Denji after setting his apartment ablaze. |
Miri Sugo, also known as Sword Man, is a supporting antagonist in the Chainsaw Man franchise. He is a Weapon Devil Hybrid who was formerly under the control of Makima. After being freed he attempted to befriend and recruit Denji into the Chainsaw Man Church but due to conflicting allegiances and goals become enemies.
Appearance
In his human form, Miri appeared to be a young man with with unkempt black hair, wearing a drawstring hoodie underneath his High School uniform
As Sword Man, he becomes a humanoid demon with a triangular metal visor for a head and two longswords as ears, dark-skinned humanoid demon with a pointy chin and sharp jaws. In addition, he also has several swords protruding from his hands.
Personality
“ | Let's get one thing straight.I didnt transer here just to recruit you. I wanted to be your friend Denji. | „ |
~ Miri explaining his intentions |
Miri Sugo has a great appreciation for freedom and free will as he described that he was used as a tool for "worthless bastards" in the past and does not appreciate being viewed as a weapon as he argued with a fellow Hybrid's idea that they were merely weapons with little human will. After he and the other Weapon Hybirds were freed from Makima's control after she was killed by Denji, Miri sought him out to be his friend. Despite claiming otherwise, he appears to have an idol worship view of Denji, as he is heavily unreceptive to other people such as classmates refusing to interact with any that are not Denji.
However, Miri is easily prone to manipulation as he was recruited into a death cult that had plans of carrying out slaughters to force Denji into becoming Chainsaw Man which he believed would genuinely save the world from Nostradamus prophecy. Despite this Sugo has a degree of morality as he questioned and initially did not want to comply or carry out the Church's plans of mass slaughter at a mall before he was forcibly stopped by Quanxi.
Miri does not appear to truly grasp the severity of his and his Weapons Devil comrades actions to the point of delusion. As he ultimately goes along with their plans and helps Barem Bridge commit an arson attack on Denji's house that kills all his pets, justifying this by telling Denji to use that anger to save the world and later fighting him as Sword Man.
