Jestro

Villain Overview

I'm good at something... I'm good at being bad!
~ Jestro.

Jestro is the secondary antagonist of LEGO Nexo Knights series. He is an evil jester who used to work for King Halbert, but his clumsiness made him incapable of doing anything good and made him a laughing stock for everyone around. That is until he stumbled upon the Book of Monsters who promised to make him the greatest villain in return for becoming his servant.

He was voiced by Vincent Tong, who also played Mephisto from LoliRock, Garble from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, David Bringdown from Phineas and Ferb, Mandarin from Iron Man: Armored Adventures and Namagem from Mega Man: Fully Charged.

Biography

Pre-series

Jestro was once an orphan who had to steal for living and often failed due to his clumsiness. Eventually, he was picked up by a knight and sent to the Knights' Academy as a thanks for returning his sword. There, Jestro met Clay Moorington, who would go on to become his best, if not only, friend. Jestro, however, was unfit to become a knight and eventually dropped out. The wizard Merlok thus decided to teach him magic skills, but he failed even then. He would eventually become the royal jester, as making others laugh at him was the only thing he was somewhat good at.

Nexo Knights

Seasons 1-2

Jestro started one of his performances at the end of the Nexo Knights' graduation ceremony, and accidentally caused a blackout in Knightonia. Distressed by the humiliation that his performance was and considering himself a "horrible failure", the jester left the Battledome and walked past Merlok's library. There, he met the Book of Monsters, who promised to make him feared instead of laughed at if he agreed to become a villain and the book's servant. When Clay and Merlok noticed Jestro picking up other evil books and summoning Lava Monsters, Merlok cast a spell that scattered the books across the kingdom. Since then, Jestro, the Book of Monsters and their Lava Monsters searched for them, battling Nexo Knights on their way, and eventually collected eleven of them.

One of the villains' schemes involved working as stand-up comedians in Funnyton to convert its population into their minions. Jestro, however, took pleasure in making people laugh with, not at, him for once, to the point where even the Nexo Knights praised his performance and persuaded him to give up his villainy. After the final evil book, Book of Betrayal, was discovered, it influenced Jestro to abandon the Book of Monsters and run off, soon after meeting up with Clay and handing the book over to him. The knight and the jester would eventually be cornered by Lava Monsters, and Jestro surrendered to them to give Clay time to escape with the book.

Jestro was taken to the Redoubt of Ruination, where he would learn that the Book of Monsters was actually the arch-necromancer Monstrox all along, and that he planned to possess his body to restore his powers. After Clay exchanged the Book of Betrayal for Jestro's freedom, Monstrox kicked the jester out and attempted to possess Clay instead. Jestro, however, would repay his friend by helping the other knights rescue him and destroy Monstrox. After this, he was given his job of a royal jester back.

Seasons 3-4

Several months after the defeat of Monstrox, Jestro would work as a weather reporter and apologize to the people of Knighton for his crimes. Unfortunately, one day he met face-to-face with the arch-necromancer, reborn as the Cloud of Monstrox, who proceeded to brainwash Jestro back into a villain. The two would go on to resurrect an army of Stone Monsters and collect Forbidden Powers to awaken the Colossus of Ultimate Destruction which Monstrox then used to ravage Knighton. After Monstrox was defeated yet again, Jestro was freed from his brainwashing, but sentenced to community service for his crimes.

LEGO Nexo Knights magazine (non-canon)

At some point after Monstrox became a digital virus, Jestro was once again working as a jester, performing as a stand-up comedian for Squirebots working at a server base. The robots, however, hated his performance, and when Axl arrived in his Rolling Arsenal, had him take the jester with him when leaving. The two came across a squad of Monstrox's InfectoByters, and Jestro, terrified of the possibility that he could turn evil again, wanted to get away from them, but had to stay with the knight as he and his teammates fought the monsters off instead. Jestro also had a movie about himself produced, but during its screening the cinema was invaded by Monstrox is search of one of the Merlok Powers. His whereabouts after Monstrox's defeat aren't elaborated upon.

Personality

Prior to his corruption, Jestro is an insecure and ambivalent jester who tries his best to impressed everyone and lived through most of his life with constant self-esteem issues as result of becoming the laughing stock of Knighton. His determination to be better than he now was evident, but Jestro's clumsiness usually proved his efforts to be futile no matter how hard he tried. Unfortunately, something worse happened in his final performance, when he caused total blackout on the whole kingdom in which the ensuing incident releases Book of Monsters from its prison.

Though he is initially supported by Clay, Jestro, fed up with his constant humiliation, eventually chooses to turn to the dark side by siding with Book of Monsters and becoming its apprentice. He does at first show hesitance to become evil until it is revealed that he had darker destiny, where he found newfound talent to become a villain both after his disillusionment with his past humiliations and corruption with Book of Evil. Surprisingly, as a villain, Jestro proved to be more competent and manipulative on anything where he also become confident to the point of arrogance, everything that he lacks before becoming evil.

Monstrox had to turn Jestro evil again after he was freed from the book's corruption. His magic made the jester even more unhinged than before, and devoid of any redeeming qualities, as he no longer had any qualms about hurting people he cared for once, and went along with the necromancer's plan of destroying Knighton. Despite this, he feels remorse over his actions after returning to normal yet again, acknowledging his guilt and accepting his subsequent punishment, showing that he was far from inherently evil.

Powers and Abilities

  • Monster Summoning and Control: With a staff and the Book of Monsters' pages, Jestro can summon and control magma/fire based monsters to do his bidding.
  • Forbidden Powers: After recovering the Staff of Monstrox from his former headquarters, Jestro can insert Forbidden Powers taken from Roguls into it and use them to wreak havoc across the kingdom.
