Our war is not for our faith. We fight to remove all foreign power from our soil. We are Al-Qatala. We are the Killers. We fight without sorrow. We wage war without sympathy. This is the only way to live....and die. A true soldier.
~ Al-Qatala's belief by the Wolf and the Butcher.

Al-Qatala (Arabic: القتلة), now known as Al-Qatala-Aljahdid (Arabic: أل قتلى الجاحديد), are the secondary antagonists of the Call of Duty franchise's rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series.

They are an international terrorist organization based in Urzikstan, and is based on the belief of removing any kind of foreign power from every country that threatens theirs. To that end, they enact terrorist acts and mass murders across the globe, hoping that it would eventually ensure peace.

History

Origins

The organization was founded in 2013 by former freedom fighter Omar "the Wolf" Sulaman in response to Urzikstan being invaded in 1999 and forcefully occupied by Russian forces under the command of General Roman Barkov. Pursuing independence via the removal of all foreign occupants from the country, Al-Qatala became a shockingly violent terrorist network operating across Africa, Europe and the Middle East, bent on inflicting multiple atrocious crimes and terrorist attacks anytime and anywhere. They also became known to be extremely capable of carrying out indiscriminate conventional attacks against both civilian and military targets, and has aspired to use weapons of mass destruction to achieve their goals. Their acts brought them into conflict with the Urzikstan Liberation Force, a paramilitary organization led by Farah Karim to oppose Barkov's control as well as Al-Qatala's actions. The network's members are relentless in pursuing Karim and are instructed to take no prisoners, and rather just kill them at all costs.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Al-Qatala are first seen deploying one of its underground cells residing in the United Kingdom launch a terrorist attack on Piccadilly Circus in London, killing countless innocent people, including children, in the process. The cell responsible were intercepted in Camden by S.A.S. led by Captain John Price and Sergeant Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, in which they learn where in Urzikstan the Wolf was hiding.

With the Wolf hiding in Rammaza Hospital in Urzikstan, Al-Qatala attempted to defend him from "Alex", Farah, Hadir and Sergeant Griggs, but were unsuccessful and the Wolf was captured while his hostages were rescued. However, after the Wolf was taken to the country's U.S. Embassy, the Butcher led Al-Qatala attacked and breached the building, relentlessly attacking and chasing them, Price and Garrick to the Ambassador's compound, and eventually, they freed the Wolf. The U.L.F. and the C.I.A. then attempted to recaptured the Wolf on the Highway of Death, fighting Al-Qatala in the process. But the plan goes awry as since Barkov's force intervened, Hadir unleashed the general's stolen gas on the Russian soldiers, leaving "Alex" and Farah with gas-masks on to join Al-Qatala.

The CIA follow Hadir to the Wolf's hideout and fight multiple Al-Qatala forces, and the Wolf is killed in the process when attempts to kill his would-be captors with a suicide vest. The Butcher planned to lead an attack on Russia using the stolen gas, but was intercepted and interrogated to reveal where it was hidden. Hadir planned to use the gas on Barkov's chemical factory, which the former had located, and Hadir led Al-Qatala to Barkov's residence, taking his relatives hostage. However, he was captured by Price and Garrick, who had learned it from interrogating the Butcher, and reluctantly handed him over to Russia in exchange for keeping the information he had on Barkov's factory, in which they then attack it and kill Barkov once and for all.

After Urzikstan's liberation and Barkov's death, Al-Qatala somehow remained active and its leadership was assumed by the mysterious Khaled Al-Asad, who had armed the organization with military-grade heavy weapons and vehicles thanks to his partnership with Russian arms dealer Victor Zakhaev. Using their arsenal, Al-Qatala, now renaming themselves as "Al-Qatala-Aljahdid", invaded Verdansk, Kastovia to assist Zakhaev in his plans to start a war that would restore the Soviet Union, in exchange for being allowed to return to Urzikstan. After Al-Asad and Zakhaev orchestrated a citywide bio-attack using Barkov's chlorine gas, Al-Qatala were pulled out of the city whilst the Armistice became divided and fought each other for survival. This allowed Al-Qatala to return to Urzikstan.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

At some point in the 2022, following the events in Verdansk, AQ became affiliated with Quds Force major Hassan Zyani, who sought vengeance against the West for the death of General Ghorbrani. To that end, they were given three American ballistic missiles stolen by the Konni for the Russian Ultranationalists leader Vladimir Makarov, and they then kept them in Al Mazrah until they could move them. AQ also began working with the Las Almas Cartel leader El Sin Nombre so they could smuggle the missiles and the guidance systems bought from Russians, specifically using places such as Amsterdam, Netherlands and Cape Vilan, Spain to achieve it.

After two of the three missiles were smuggled, Task Force 141 got wind of Hassan's intentions and assaulted his compound in Al Mazrah. AQ forces helped defend Hassan by shooting down one of the helicopters that gave him enough time to escape. After he did escape, they continued defending the warehouse so 141 members Simon "Ghost" Riley and Johnny "Soap" MacTavish couldn't recover the remaining missile, but were ultimately unsuccessful. Nevertheless, AQ continued doing business with Las Almas in Amsterdam. At one point, members of AQ and the cartel conducted an electronic transaction. It was then intercepted by Price, Gaz and Laswell in search of the stolen missiles.

An AQ cell was stationed at Cape Vilan, shipping the Russian guidance systems so they could be installed onto the two remaining missiles. They began defending outbuildings and the lighthouse when they were being infiltrated by Price and Gaz wearing ghillie suits along with assistance from Laswell in a boat with a sniper rifle, and they were each getting killed despite their best efforts. After Price and Gaz found the passageway underneath the lighthouse, AQ attacked the boat where Laswell had positioned herself and kidnapped her. They then took through Urzikstan and intended to take her to Al Mazrah, where they can get her underground and make any chance of rescuing her impossible. Although General Shepherd wouldn't help them, Price, Gaz got assistance from Nikolai, Farah and the ULF to intercept the AQ convoy and rescue Laswell in time.

Under Hassan's orders, AQ forces set up one of the missiles on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico owned by the cartel, so it would fire once it was ready. As an extra precaution, they removed its controls and took them on a cargo ship so it couldn't be disarmed. After 141, Shadow Company and Los Vaqueros launched an assault on the rig, AQ launched the missile remotely but it had go through phases until it could take off. When one of the teams reached the launcher, they quickly realized the controls were on the ship which another team was assaulting. AQ fought off the enemy forces but they were able to get the controls; and they used the missile to destroy itself when they learned it couldn't be aborted.

During the time which Shepherd, Phillip Graves and Shadow betrayed 141 and Los Vaqueros to protect their reputations due to losing the missiles in the first place, Hassan and AQ took this opportunity to make it to Chicago with the final missile so they can then launch it at Washington D.C. from a cartel-owned building. As they set up shop, they took civilians as hostages should they face any interference from 141. As such, 141 infiltrated the building and fought many AQ forces who attempted to kill them to protect Hassan and prevent them from stopping the launch. Eventually, the missile was launched but Soap was later able to get the controls from Hassan himself. He and several AQ militants attempted to kill Soap by himself as he detonated the missile mid-flight. After the missile was destroyed, the AQ militants were killed by Soap and Hassan was finally killed by Ghost.

Some time after Hassan's death, AQ's operations were continually being undermined in Al Mazrah thanks to covert operations run by Laswell. Additionally, Hadir escaped from Russian custody and rose in the ranks of Al-Qatala as their new commander. Under Hadir's command, AQ raided a Soviet-era bunker in the Sattiq mountains in Urzikstan and retrieved the thermonuclear missile warheads it was housing. They were also fighting ULF fighters and Alex, and while the fighters were slaughtered, Hadir spared Alex before leaving with the warheads, intending to use them on Russia.
