"CRY FOR ME" was originally a song that might have never been released to the world... but it managed to be saved through performing on MAMA 💕 So because of that, don't be sad ONCE.
"Cry For Me" (stylized as CRY FOR ME) is a digital single by TWICE. It was officially released on December 18, 2020. An English version of the song is also featured on their tenth mini album, Taste of Love, as well as the Japanese version which was part of the compilation album, #TWICE4.
The unfinished version of the song was first performed at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards. In a 2022 documentary released by Mnet, Jihyo said that their agency, JYP Entertainment, was hesitant to release "CRY FOR ME", but let TWICE perform it at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards after the members insisted.[1]
At midnight on December 8, it was confirmed by JYP Entertainment on Twitter that the single will be released in the future.[2] On December 10, it was officially available to pre-save on multiple platforms.
The completed version was released on December 18 at 2 PM KST. On April 27, 2021, TWICE performed the song on the Kelly Clarkson Show, which is their first-ever TV broadcast performance on American television.
On July 6, 2022, a curious ONCE asked Jihyo on DearU Bubble regarding her birthday photo she took with Sana from a year ago that was previously uploaded on TWICE's official Instagram story. She revealed it was a scrapped jacket photoshoot for "CRY FOR ME". On April 26, 2024, when JeongSa's 2WICE's DATE episode was aired, it was further confirmed by Jeongyeon and Sana that the scrapped "CRY FOR ME" photoshoot was meant to be released as an album instead of a digital single. Jeongyeon was on hiatus at that time of their jacket shoot, but the company wanted to release it as nine members and a final decision was made: TWICE and JYPE decided not to push the release of "CRY FOR ME" album.
Some people mishear Mina's line "L O V E or hatred" as "I'll never hear your hatred".
On early September 2022, a hacking incident occured at Mnet's official YouTube channel, leading to several performance videos of K-pop groups got deleted. Some videos manage to retrieve back, but MAMA performances that has high viewership like -2020 MAMA- TWICE CRY FOR ME was last seen to have more than 27 million views, never recovered again.
