Marriage

Moyou mii3

Marriage is a type of relationship in Tomodachi Collection and Tomodachi Life, in which two sweethearts join together and become husband and wife.

A marriage usually occurs after a certain amount of time (anywhere between months and, very rarely, under an hour) has passed and both Miis maintain a good relationship with each other (however, also very rarely, a proposal request can be made when the Miis are still at the default relationship level). One of the two dating Miis will have a problem icon and say that they want to get married to their sweetheart. It is possible to have multiple marriages within 24 hours, but this is extremely rare.

In Collection, a marriage will occur automatically offscreen or upon entering the apartment of one of the Miis; in Life, there will be a minigame where the player has to help one of the Miis propose.

Proposal Request

"I want to Propose to [Mii]. Do you think I should?"
— Mii, Tomodachi Life
Proposal Thought

In the Mii's apartment, an intense violin riff in the background will be heard, accompanied by a slow heartbeat. Upon tapping the Mii's thought bubble, the Mii will say they want to propose, and the player can choose to help out. Choosing "Not right now" allows the player to make possible preparations before the proposal. Unlike confessions, proposal requests cannot be refused or postponed.

When the player agrees, the Mii will first ask where should they propose to the sweetheart, which can be at either at a fireworks show, the train station, the amusement park, or a fancy restaurant. The Mii will also ask if they should change clothes, then say they are really nervous at proposing at the right moment, and request that the player should help them propose to the sweetheart, by telling them if their sweetheart is thinking about him or her.

In Tomodachi Collection, right when the player enters the apartment, the Miis will immediately announce that they are getting married. There is no proposal mini-game and the screen will skip to their honeymoon following ending credits.

The Proposal

"My [darling/love]... will you marry me?"
— Mii, Tomodachi Life

After the player agrees to help the Mii propose, the Mii and their sweetheart go to the chosen location, where there will be a mini-game where the player must help the Mii propose at the right time by signaling that the sweetheart is thinking of them. The player has three chances to help the Mii propose, represented by three small hearts floating between the couple.

As a slow heartbeat is heard, a thought bubble will rapidly appear and disappear over the sweetheart as various pictures cycle through, showing the various thoughts going through their mind. When the proposer's face appears in the sweetheart's thought bubble, the player must quickly tap "NOW!" to let the proposer know that it's time to talk. They must successfully do this four times before the proposer can finally propose. The lines are different depending on the gender of the proposer, and their dialogue is color-coded to indicate who is speaking (blue for the boy, red for the girl).

When the player succeeds, the conversation will carry out, and a thumbs up will show as the hearts' size expand. The conversation differs depending on the round. If the player misses, the sweetheart may abruptly change the conversation accordingly to what is in the thought bubble; if there is nothing in the thought bubble or no thought bubble at all, the environment may disturb the conversation in several ways (e.g. passing train, crow flying by and cawing loudly, loud cheering, a loud crash in the background, or a waiter/waitress suddenly checking up).

Upon failure, one heart will break. If all three hearts are lost, the Mii being proposed to will ask to leave as the proposal fails. The Mii can ask to try again in the future, but sometimes the other Mii will ask instead. They will not gain sadness upon a failed proposal.

Once the player succeeds three times and the hearts are full-grown and the couple are staring at one another, the heartbeat in the background speeds up, and they must tap "NOW!" at the right moment one more time to finish proposing. If done so, the Mii will propose to the sweetheart, and the latter will happily accept. As celebratory romantic music plays, the Mii who had proposed will cheer while any other Miis around will applaud. The player can applaud by tapping the touch screen until the view fades to white.

Getting Married/The Wedding

"We're so excited for our wedding!"
— Mii, Tomodachi Life
Marriage

Following a successful proposal, the Mii and their sweetheart will present a gift and proceed to get married and have their wedding. If the couple are kids, the gift will always be an Age-o-matic, and the player will be asked to use it on them before their marriage can take place. The player can choose to use it or not; if their request is denied, the wedding will be called off.

After the engaged Mii couple gives a present, the wedding scene is shown. A bell is shown ringing as white doves fly past, and the camera shows the newlyweds: the groom wearing a tuxedo with the bride wearing a wedding dress and holding a bouquet of flowers, with a cake shown between them. They slowly approach one other then face forward happily as an applause is heard. Their guests are then shown, who are randomly chosen friends, parents or siblings. The most important guests (usually the best friends of the bride and groom and family members if they have any) stand in the center. The men wear suits while the women wear either frilly dresses, loose-fitted dresses, bubble dresses, evening gowns, or gothic dresses. Next, in an overhead view, the bride tosses her bouquet over her shoulder as the view becomes a gold-tinted photograph.

After Marriage

"Please don't stop checking in on us just because we're married."
— Mii, Tomodachi Life
Main article: Mii Homes

After marriage, the couple will spend their honeymoon in a random country, bring back a souvenir, and settle in a newly constructed house. The married Miis can switch between living in their house or in their own apartments; however, they can still only interact with the player in the apartments. A married couple can have a baby with the player's permission (if the baby setting is on). Marriage is not guaranteed to be forever, since divorce is possible.

Locations

A total of four locations can be chosen, each with different interactions.

Screenshot Location Outcome Celebration Interruptions
Fireworks show The Miis will sit and watch the fireworks. A pink firework explodes in the shape of a heart, with smaller hearts raining down from it.
  1. Several fireworks will loudly go off, drowning out the proposing Mii.
  2. Another attendee will yell excitedly over the proposing Mii.
Train station The Miis will wait at the station as other Miis wait with them. The other Miis at the train station happily applaud.
  1. A train will pass, blaring its horn and drowning out the proposing Mii.
  2. An announcement will come over the PA asking patrons to not leave baggage on the platform, drowning out the Mii.
Amusement park The Miis will ride the ferris wheel. Doves will appear flying outside.
  1. An errant gust of wind will shake the container, catching both Miis off-guard.
Fancy restaurant The Miis will eat their dinner at the restaurant, as other Mii couples eat with them. Smooth jazz plays throughout the proposal. All the Miis in the restaurant, including the waiter, will applaud.
  1. A waiter will interrupt and ask if the couple need anything. The proposing Mii will say they're fine before the waiter leaves.
  2. A loud scream and a crash is heard from the kitchen, drowning out the proposing Mii.

Trivia

  • When the proposal between two Miis is successful and they are kids, the couple gets changed into their clothes for the wedding after they are turned into adults. However, if the proposal is between two adult Miis, they do not get changed.
  • Due to the presence of a wedding cake between the married couple, it is obvious the setting is at the reception and not the ceremony.
  • It is possible to remarry a different Mii as well as ex-sweetheart/spouse.
  • If a Kid-o-matic was used on a Mii and they get married, either that Mii will not return to their original height, only growing at the same rate as the opposite Mii, or not grow at all.
  • The restaurant proposal is the only place that does not begin with a prologue conversation.
    • In addition, the Mii being proposed will always be eating salad.
  • At the fireworks show and train station, the Mii gets down on one knee and gestures with one hand out when proposing; this does not work in the amusement park and fancy restaurant because they sit in a spaced area.
  • If the player uses a camera to take a snapshot, this will temporary freeze the action so they have a few more seconds to tap the heart when the proposing Mii's face is in the thought bubble. This helps make proposing easier, in case there is only one chance left. Goes the same for using the HOME button.
  • When the proposal is successful, the Mii who proposed will have a different cheering animation depending on their personality:
    • If the Mii is Easygoing, they will do a happy dance.
    • If the Mii is Outgoing, they will raise their arms.
    • If the Mii is Independent, they will clap their hands over their mouth.
    • If the Mii is Confident, they will give a proud shrug.
  • Since the restaurant proposal does not have the sweethearts staring into the distance, they stop eating their meals and there is no sleeping failure possible in the last round.
  • The proposal scenes are the only time in the game where the Miis' subtitles are color-coded depending on who is speaking at the moment (the boyfriend's are blue, the girlfriend's are red). This was likely done to avoid confusing the player due to the single camera angles and having them both onscreen at once, sometimes with a speaker's back to the camera.
    • In the events where the environment disrupts the proposal, it will be denoted with yellow subtitles.
  • If the proposal fails and the Mii wants to try again, it doesn't mean the same Mii will propose this time around.
  • The music at the wedding is a romantic orchestral waltz rendition of the Mii Maker theme.
  • In the Japanese version of Tomodachi Life, the groom and bride's eyes blink in the still picture after the bride tosses the bouquet.
  • In the Japanese version and a rare event in the Western version, one partner is an adult and the other is a child (due to one partner turning eighteen in the middle of their relationship in the Western version), only the younger partner will be affected by the Age-o-Matic, while the older partner sits on the ground, looking on in amazement and clapping.
  • In the Western versions, after a successful proposal, the proposer will react to their sweetheart agreeing to marry. In the Japanese version, the two Miis will just stare at each other.
  • The "thoughts" of the sweetheart may switch quickly to something else before the player taps the heart button.
    • This potential depends on the Mii's personality. For example, if the opposite Mii's speed setting is set to the slowest proportion, the thought bubbles will switch less often and not as quickly, making the proposal much easier, yet sometimes more annoying. On the contrary, if it is set to the highest proportion, the thought bubbles change much more often and switch in a faster pace, making the proposal harder.
    • As another factor, the higher the opposite Mii's relationship with their sweetheart and more likely they are to think of them. The higher the relationship status, and the easier the proposal, and vise versa. The proposing Mii's relationship with the other does not affect anything at this point.
  • Marriages could happen when the Mii's relationship is "Super in love", but doing so will make the proposal harder. In addition, it is unknown what causes the "thoughts" to switch rapidly in some scenes.
  • In real life, it is more traditional for the male to propose. Female proposals are quite rare and usually happen outside the US.
  • If your lookalike has a sweetheart, then the lookalike Mii will almost always be the one proposing.
  • When both Miis marry and the female Mii is seen bald, they will still be shown with hair while wearing the veil at the wedding. This can also happen in general when you give a wedding dress to a bald Mii.
