A breakup is when two Miis that are dating or married end their romantic relationship with each other. Afterwards, they will show up as each other's "Ex" in their relationships.

A breakup can occur if a Mii has a low relationship with their partner. Upon tapping a Mii's thought bubble as the player enters their apartment, the Mii will say that things are not going well with their lover. The player can decide whether the Mii should move on or work things out.

If the player decides that the Mii should move on, there will be a cut-scene in the Café where the Mii breaks up with their sweetheart, saying they are tired and want to be friends again.

If the player decides that the Mii should try to work things out, there will be a cut-scene in the other Mii's apartment where they stand facing each other with the lights off and a clock ticking in the background. When the Mii succeeds, they will shake hands as the lights turn on and suggest trying again as the other Mii responds in agreement. If it fails, the couple crouch down while looking at the floor, clutching the sides of their heads with both hands and rapidly shaking them as a gong is heard, and they will immediately break up. This has a low chance of succeeding, however, if it does, then it will affect their relationship statuses; if it succeeds with a sweetheart couple, both statuses will revert or improve to "Very much in love" depending on their previous status before a breakup. The same does not apply to married couples; their relationships will remain the same until they have the opportunity to improve again or another divorce attempt is made.

If the two Miis were married, their house will be completely demolished, leaving a vacant spot in its place until a new married couple replaces it. If the Miis were children, the Age-o-Matic they used will wear off after they divorce. Miis will not divorce or fight if they have a baby at home, making babies the only surefire method of preventing breakup. If they occasionally break up after having a child, the child will be travelling.

Breakup Flashbacks

If the player goes to the apartment of the Mii being dumped and tap the bubble, they will say "Will I ever recapture those happy times again?" (NTSC)/"I'll never be able to get those happy times back again." (PAL), leading this game to a flashback when the two Miis were together. The short version without the tennis scenes and photos happens after two Miis that were sweethearts broke up without dumping one of them for anyone else, or if the player advises one of the Miis to go through with breaking up. The long version occurs if a Mii ditches their sweetheart for another Mii or if they fail to work things out.

The first scene is on the beach, where the Miis chase each other along the water and splash. The male Mii wears swim trunks and the female Mii wears a bikini. It is followed by the "tropical beach" photo of them smiling and wearing their respective swimsuits.

The next scene is the sweethearts playing tennis. After a few hits, the Mii hits the ball out into the distance, leaving their sweetheart to giggle as they look surprised and wink. It is followed by the "Bokeh" photo of them smiling, wearing their current clothes without hats.

The following scene takes place in the Mii's apartment. The first features of the two in a back-and-forth conversation saying they love each other. In this first scene only, the Miis are wearing matching Vintage sweatshirts (but with their current hats). The Mii stands on the left wearing a red Vintage sweatshirt while the other stands on the right wearing a yellow one. It is followed by the "holiday" photo of them (current clothes, neutral expression, no hats). Next, the Mii tells a joke to their sweetheart using a random item, but the sweetheart was not paying attention.

The last scene takes place shortly after the breakup, first the Mii playing tennis alone before giving up, followed by the "cherry blossoms" photo of the Miis (current clothes, neutral expression, hats removed). The final scene of the flashback is the Mii sitting on the beach, staring on the sunset alone.

Other versions of the flashback can occur after the main flashback is played. Upon tapping the Mii's thought bubble, they will say "I can't stop thinking about all those happy times we had..." (NTSC)/"It makes me think back to those happy times." (PAL), and 1 of 4 possible loops will play. The first one is of the Miis chasing each other on the beach. Two others are versions of the "I love you" scene of the flashback but with the Miis repeatedly adding "really" to their conversation, or the Miis giving each other nicknames. Alternatively, the joke scene may play instead, where the Mii continues to whip out a random item and tell jokes, with the sweetheart giving a non-committal response.

All of these are endless loops and continue until the player leaves except for the repeating phrase version where it ends after the phrase has been said 19 times.

Cutscene Breakup

An example of breakup in this way at the park.

Another way for two Miis to break up can be done by entering the fountain, park, café, tower, beach or amusement park. The Miis who broke up this way will not have their lover listed as Ex-Sweetheart; instead, they will be listed in Friends.

A cutscene will automatically begin with the couple sitting together. The first Mii will say "We had a good run. Thanks for everything."/"Thanks for the great memories.", with the other saying "No, thank you./Thank you too." As a blurb reads "[Mii 1] and [Mii 2] are back to being just friends.", screen fades to white and the game is taken back to the island. When this happens, neither of the two Miis will gain sadness. This type of breakup can be avoided if the player does not enter any hangout area, or only enter an area when the couple are not there at all.

Getting Back Together

Reconciliation 7

In Life, it is possible for Miis to get back together depending on their relationship status. The procedure is similar to the way a Mii would confess their love with a few differences. As melancholic music plays, one of them cannot stop thinking about the past with their lover, and requests that they get back together. Upon agreeing, the Mii will relay their message to their love interest, with the latter ask if they really said that before deciding they will think about it.

The scene that follows will always take place on the beach, with a procedure similar to a second-try confession. The Mii will ask if they want to get back together. If it all goes well, the two Miis will return to being sweethearts; if they were married, their house will be rebuilt. An Age-o-matic that was used on either Mii will also return.

If it fails, the Mii will sink to the ground sadly as they become sad and heartbroken, but will not gain sadness and their relationship does not decrease. Additionally, the target Mii would immediately refuse and ask if things are going okay, leaving their love interest sad, and they will gain sadness. It is possible for an ex-sweetheart to express this feeling even after their former partner is in love with a different Mii. In this case, the new sweetheart can show up in place of the Mii's ex to tell them that they are with their former love interest now, and hope they are cool with that. Alternatively, a friend of both Miis can also show up, saying that the asking Mii's ex is not interested in getting back together like how they get rejected during a confession.

Trivia

Breakup cafe
  • Since breakup requests are random and not predictable, with no way to return when the player taps the Mii's thought bubble, their relationships should be checked, then the player should return to the island and save immediately before answering. If the couple fails to resolve things, players must close the game without saving, then re-enter and try again.
    • Additionally, it is hard to tell if the couple can work things out or not.
  • It is entirely possible that a couple with low relationship levels will break up or divorce off-screen while the game is not played, without any orange problems indicating their desire for a divorce before. The next day, only one Mii will be depressed.
  • In the Western versions, the music playing over the cafe's radio during the breakup cutscene is a soul-style, lower-key version of the theme from the Compatibility Tester if two Miis get 80-89% rating.
    • In the Japanese version, the music is the Idol song from Collection, starting from halfway into the song. It also loops improperly in the soundtrack.
  • When a Mii breaks up with their sweetheart, the Mii sometimes will not get depressed if they are sick or involved in a fight.
  • When a Mii takes a photo, they might capture another Mii going out with their sweetheart in the café, with the ex-sweetheart being sad and jealous.
  • In the Japanese version, a Mii's spouse can be stolen by another Mii if that Mii has low relationships, leaving the other Mii in sadness and their house disappeared. In Western versions, nobody will fall in love with the married Mii.
  • After breaking up, the asking Mii will gain half bar of sadness if the Miis were sweethearts. If the Miis were married, the asking Mii will get 3/4 bar of sadness. Additionally, the Mii being dumped will always have a full bar of sadness.
  • It is possible for a breakup or divorce to happen even with a good status. This happens after the asking Mii's apology is rejected or the third Mii fails to stop a huge fight.
  • In Tomodachi Collection, Miis cannot get back together after a breakup.
  • In Tomodachi Life, it is possible for ex-sweethearts or ex-spouses to become friends again after a breakup. This is very rare, and it will occur offscreen.
  • If you are to use travel tickets to level up the relationship between two Miis to above "kinda getting along" status, and then save while one of them has a bubble in which they request a breakup, and then say "work it out," the two of them may not reconcile despite being at a high relationship level.
  • If a Mii has a breakup problem, it will continue to persist until the player takes care of it. This can cause an off screen breakup if ignored.
  • The event when a Mii wishes to get back with their Ex partner is very rare, since after breakups, most Mii’s have a low relationship status with their ex.
