Tanks are large, weaponised vehicles that are used in warfare. Although they are very slow, they command tremendous power through their massive turrets, firing shells capable of destroying buildings. They are also heavily armoured, protecting the driver from harm and allowing them to steadily rip through an enemy's defences. Their weakness tends to be the lightly-protected base, where the "caterpillar" tracks are found.
Tanks on Mobius
Although rarely used as a prominent weapon on Mobius, various forms of tanks have appeared in Sonic the Comic from time to time. The only recognisable tank to be used by Doctor Ivo Robotnik (or Commander Brutus) was controlled by his Troopers and was sent to destroy the Echo City Zone. Meeting no resistance, the tank quickly trundled into town and completely obliterated its surroundings, killing every civilian. Fortunately, Tails arrived later and, thanks to a freak bolt of lightning, was able to travel back in time to destroy the tank before it could complete the massacre.
Later, Grand Chief Whip, the Doctor Robotnik Appreciation Tribe leader, accompanied Wally Dithers on a mission to destroy the Freedom Fighters' Control Centre in a highly-weaponised tank. Even though the vehicle had more than enough ammunition to destroy their target, the uncharacteristically indecisive Dithers dithered over which weapon to use and his tank was quickly destroyed by Sonic the Hedgehog. The only other tanks to be found on Mobius were brought by Colonel Granite during his attempt to conquer the planet. Sonic destroyed one of them after it had fired at Shortfuse the Cybernik, using its wreckage to block the portal between Mobius and Planet Earth. Another pointed its barrel directly at Tails and Johnny Lightfoot but it was seemingly destroyed by Nature itself.
Badnik Tanks were an early experiment into tank use but never caught on. Only two models were even seen to be made.
Badniks known as "Skorptanks" were created by Robotnik during the New Robotnik Empire and may be similar to Skorp.
Non-Sonic tanks
The Kid Chameleon series had numerous examples of tanks appearing. As Red Stealth, Casey was confronted by a tank early on into his Wildside adventure and found that his sword barely dented it. With help from The Voice, the hero yelled "Chameleon" and gained extra power, stabbing it hard enough to make it explode. Later in the same story, a futuristic tank ambushed Suzi and Casey as they warped onto a telepad but the strong Bezerker was able to smash it into pieces. Casey himself later turned into a tank-like being, as Juggernaut resembles a skeleton grafted to a tank and has the weaponry to match.
In the Mutant League story, The Razor Kid somehow commandeered a tank and used to give the Midway Monsters an advantage in their chase for Coach Brikka's head. The tank initially allowed them to carve through their mercenary enemies but, as Grim pointed out, the tank soon began to run out of fuel and ammo. The problem became moot as an enormous warrior ripped the top off of the tank and grabbed the Kid.
During an archaeological dig beneath Ribble, Trevillion discovered an abandoned armoury behind an old security door. Inside was a tank, amongst a large quantity of guns and bullets. The Zeonites soon took control of the find, although the tank was not seen to be used in their operation. It is possible that it was utilised to open the locked door to the Ancient Tower.
