- "A serpent can shed its skin, but it is still a serpent."
- ―Anakin Skywalker to Padmé Amidala

Snakes (also called serpents) were creatures with a long and limbless body, slitted eyes, a forked tongue allowing them to smell, and sharp fangs. They could grow as long as three meters and become as thick as the arm of a Kiffar. Snakes slithered smoothly over surfaces with a distinctive twisting motion. When angered, they started hissing and thrashing. Some snakes were venomous, and their bites were painful.[2] The Anacondans were a snakelike sentient species.[3]
During her time as a bounty hunter, Asajj Ventress wore shoulder plates that bore an illustration of a black, twisted snake[4] due to its symbolism as a oft-misunderstood creature. Ventress herself was likewise often misunderstood,[5] having been held by pirates as a young child, learning the Jedi ways only to lose her master, being trained as a Sith acolyte before being abandoned in the heat of battle, and rejoining her Nightsister brethren only for them to be massacred. At one point, Ventress also wore a necklace crafted to look like a snake.[2]
The swamp-covered planet Dagobah was home to at least one species of snake, the vine snake.[5] Some small specimens resided in Yoda's hut; one such creature startled Luke Skywalker while he was preparing to leave Dagobah to rescue Han Solo and Leia Organa.[6] The swamps of Rodia were home to countless varieties of snakes;[7] Skywalker notably encountered one when he opened the door to Huulik's mausoleum.[8] Black snakes could be found on Dathomir,[2] and Moraband was home to a giant Sith serpent that, on closer inspection, was made of hundreds of smaller snakes.[9]
"Snake" could be a term for an individual one held in low regard. General Akenathen Tandin called King Sanjay Rash a snake when he finally took the Onderon rebels side.[10] Leia Organa considered Bevicard, a senator of the New Republic, to be a snake, but nevertheless an honest one,[11] and Rey once called Kylo Ren a "murderous snake" during a Force-bond connection on Ahch-To.[12]
