The lungs were the essential organs of respiration^[2] in oxygen-breathing^[3] animals, including humans^[4] and Gungans. The Gungan species had strong and sturdy lungs which allowed them to hold their breath for extended periods, enabling them able to travel freely to their underwater cities.^[2] When exhaling, humans expelled carbon dioxide from their lungs.^[4]
